A nearly full gang at #BSSDH2025 – a vibrant mix of disciplines, career stages, and countries. The weather was perfect and the vibe even better. Already looking forward to #BSSDH2026! ☀️
Day 5 at #BSSDH2025 came with a few clouds – fitting for the final day. We’re wrapping up almost with pizza – a historical map-making workshop led by the brilliant Giovanni Pietro Vitali, followed by a reflection session and suggestions for #BSSDH2026.
Day 4 at #BSSDH2025 brought also a 4.5-hour hands-on session on LLMs in humanities research – with two breaks, of course. For many, a first real dive into this space. Led by Valdis Saulespurēns & Anda Baklāne.
Day 4 at #BSSDH2025: still sunny ☼, still (almost) everyone here! We kicked off with Sarah Oberbichler from the DH Lab at the Leibniz Institute of European History in Mainz, presenting a keynote on new approaches to using LLMs for historical newspaper research.
This year’s #BSSDH2025 is fully in-person – with one exception: a remote keynote by amazing Claire Lemercier (@cnrs.fr) on "Numbers and Networks: Between Quantitative History and Digital Humanities".
Like all keynotes, it is livestreamed on YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL8Y...
The new University of Latvia campus offers a bit more than you might expect from a summer school venue – open roof terraces, a community garden, and many quiet spots to take a break or play a quick game.
Thanks to UL for giving #BSSDH2025 full access to its House of Science!
Day 3 of #BSSDH2025 starts with Giovanni Pietro Vitali’s (Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines University) workshop on network analysis – brilliant teacher.
Also: still sunny in Rīga. That makes three days in a row. ☀️
Due to high demand, we brought @transkribus.bsky.social to #BSSDH2025 – and we’re glad we did. @caromein.bsky.social is an amazing teacher!
#BSSDH2025, Day 2:
This morning’s workshop with Daniel Ihrmark (Linnaeus University) is all about understanding code – not to become programmers, but to see what Python can reveal in historical texts and data.
5 days of digital humanities at the University of Latvia start today!
The 7th Baltic Summer School of Digital Humanities – 65 participants from 15 countries.
Gabor Toth (@c2dh.uni.lu) opens with a keynote on the computational study of missing records.

..because of national-level procedures, political inertia, bureaucratic loops, internal battles etc.
Meanwhile the ERIC landscape keeps evolving – new ones emerge, networks expand, and researchers in countries where the process moves slowly are left waiting.
Something here just doesn’t seem to work.
Leaving the wonderful #DARIAH2025 event a bit early, reflecting on this: The interest of researchers/institutions to join ERICs is strong and growing. National contributions vary, but in the SSH field, they can be relatively modest. And yet... becoming a national member of an ERIC takes YEARS. 1/2
Having fun in Göttingen with the DARIAH folks.
I said: “Let’s plan something in Rīga.”
Ed: “Sure! How big are we talking?”

Diaries are special. Even more so when they come with drawings and photos – like this one from a Latvian refugee girl in a DP camp in Germany, 1945.
We’ve just launched a new call inviting diaspora Latvians to share their life writings for digitising & archiving. www.latviesi.com/jaunumi/kadu...

Another poster at #DARIAH2025 – this time with a different (but equally brilliant) team, presenting the #AISTER project. Exploring how AI & citizen participation can support cultural resilience in times of crisis, with a special focus on Ukraine.

#DARIAH2025 Working Group Showcase. Wondering when the #oralhistory and digital #folkloristics will step in -- so much to share, learn, and collaborate on. @dariaheu.bsky.social
From Scientific Board and NCC meetings to hands-on workshops and working group meetups – intense discussions are already in full swing at the #DARIAH2025 Annual Event in Göttingen.

Šonedēļas notikums: Jelgavas Mūzikas vidusskolas skolēnu koncertuzvedums "Mežs neuzbrūk" pēc grāmatas "Meža meitas" motīviem. Pašu jauniešu izlolots un izspēlēts. Saviļņojoši un skaisti! Bija tik ļoti īpaši būt klāt šajā notikumā. 23. novembrī iespēja redzēt Vircavas Tautas namā.
