Specialized small models are actually a very powerful idea, and many AI labs are moving in that direction. A 7B model specialized for one domain (Rust, Python, JavaScript) can sometimes outperform a much larger general model for that specific task.

The relationship between model size and performance follows scaling laws with diminishing returns.

The quality difference between a 7B and a ~700B parameter LLM is very large, but it is not proportional to size. A 700B model is 100× larger, yet the improvement in capability may be only 2–5× in reasoning quality depending on the task.

Small models that can run on consumer hardware are worth trying.

Though AI is hyped too much, its use cases are not worth even one percent of the hype, but it is still useful. It checks grammar for me, suggests coding syntax that I can use, and summarizes articles when I don't want to read the full text.
