this is one of those things that really pushes me over the edge. we have normalized and tolerated bad behavior from drivers in pedestrian-heavy cities to the extent that they just don't consider the gravity of what they're doing, or why we have the damn stop signs. it sucks. shouldn't be this way

i reserve a special hatred for drivers who, upon seeing someone about to step into a crosswalk they're approaching, speed up instead of coming to the (legally required) stop. it's genuinely egregious behavior and you get the sense they don't even notice they're playing chicken with people's lives

This is a remarkable case of Chinese authorities threatening a UK university into halting research on human rights violations, and the university acquiescing.

For years, the university has faced a backlash in China, and falling student numbers. In the summer of 2022, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian called the HKC – whose namesake, Lady Kennedy, has herself been hit with sanctions by Beijing because of her criticisms of China’s human rights record – a “vanguard for anti-China forces”. Around the same time, Sheffield Hallam’s websites were blocked in China. “This undoubtedly had a negative impact on recruitment in 23/24,” a university employee wrote in July 2024. The person also wrote: “Attempting to retain the business in China and publication of the [HKC] research are now untenable bedfellows.”
