A new study predicts up to 34,027 yearly UK heat deaths in the 2070sβup from the recent baseline of 634. Climate change action could dramatically limit these rising heatwave deaths.

Many terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems have lost their uniqueness as competitive generalists (think grass, pigeons, etc.) replace endemic species. But that doesn't appear to be the case for all ocean fish.
Huge thanks to a powerhouse co-author team for getting this across the finish line!
New research published in PLOS Climate suggests that extreme heat could lead to 30,000 deaths per year in England and Wales by the 2070s

Most marine communities around the world do not have any change in beta-diversity. Some are becoming more homogenous, but some are also becoming more differentiated. Fig. 1 from Kitchel et al. 2025 PLOS Climate.
one signature of human impacts on the planet (esp climate change) is ecosystems becoming less uniqueβa process called "biotic homogenization".
it turns out that isn't happening in the global oceans!
