Tropical nights are on the rise in Europe, offering little relief from daytime heat. The Copernicus Climate Change Service tracks these trends to help keep communities informed and safe.

An interesting comparison of this summer so far with the UK’s infamous summer of 1976 β˜€οΈπŸ₯΅ This year’s June heat was more widespread across Europe + the UK saw larger temperature anomalies this June, but drought in 1976 was more prolonged and widespread with more extreme water use restrictions πŸ’§

Exceptional Mediterranean water temperatures in June reduced nighttime air cooling along the coasts & increased humidity, worsening heat stress impacts - some coastal areas saw 10-15 tropical nights (when the temperature doesn’t drop below 20Β°C) last month, when they’d typically see none in June πŸ₯΅β˜€οΈπŸŒ™

Two significant heatwaves in Europe in June meant that many people experienced more heat stress days than average: 'very strong heat stress' experienced across a lot of southern and western Europe, and part of Portugal saw 'extreme heat stress' πŸ₯΅

We have just had the warmest June for England, although it was still warm but less extreme elsewhere. It was very sunny and dry in the East and wetter and cloudier in the West. Here is a summary of the past 12 months weather/climate for the UK. #dataviz

UK maps showing changes in temperatures for typical summer days and hot summer days.

1Β°C of global warming does NOT mean that heatwaves 'just' get hotter by 1Β°C.

Over large parts of the UK, global warming means that heatwaves are 3-4Β°C warmer, with worse consequences for people and ecosystems.

The tongue of Rhone #Glacier ten days after my last visit. Can you guess how much ice melted away? 1️⃣ meter in terms of thickness! 1️⃣0️⃣ days... And that's just the beginning of the summer season.
We know the times are bad for the ice, but still it is hard to accept these numbers!

The alps have warmed extremely - as can be seen here in the data from #Innsbruck. Warm years are dominant since the 90s, cold years disappear. Massive glacier melting is only one consequence.

Weather Obs started very early here, Maria Theresa was still alive.

On the day the @metoffice.gov.uk publish a new paper showing a rapidly increasing chance of 40Β°C days in the UK, the GFS produces a forecast ensemble member showing 43Β°C in a couple of weeks time. This is an extremely unlikely outcome but highlights that these types of temperature are now plausible.

The climate is changing so fast that we haven’t seen how bad extreme weather could get Record heat, storms and floods reveal new extremes made possible by climate change.

Some forecast models are showing the potential for record-breaking heat in the UK later in June 🌑️

Ensemble forecasts can help us better understand the extremes of the current climate. @hayleyjfowler.bsky.social, Paul Davies and I wrote about this last year theconversation.com/the-climate-...

Major US climate website likely to be shut down after almost all staff fired Exclusive: Climate.gov, which supports public education on climate science, will soon no longer publish new content

One entirely nonsensical thing about this is that 'climate' is so much more than climate *change* – even if you were to deny climate change, you can't escape climate variability. "Climate prediction" is also seasonal forecasting, ENSO, and so on. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

In 2024, Europe saw average to slightly above-average fire danger for most of the year, with the highest values in September. Around 110,000 hectares burnt in Portugal that month, accounting for around a quarter of the overall total burnt area in Europe for the year. bit.ly/4ctJySA #ESOTC2024 #C3S
