Exceptional Mediterranean water temperatures in June reduced nighttime air cooling along the coasts & increased humidity, worsening heat stress impacts - some coastal areas saw 10-15 tropical nights (when the temperature doesn’t drop below 20°C) last month, when they’d typically see none in June 🥵☀️🌙

Two significant heatwaves in Europe in June meant that many people experienced more heat stress days than average: 'very strong heat stress' experienced across a lot of southern and western Europe, and part of Portugal saw 'extreme heat stress' 🥵

We have just had the warmest June for England, although it was still warm but less extreme elsewhere. It was very sunny and dry in the East and wetter and cloudier in the West. Here is a summary of the past 12 months weather/climate for the UK. #dataviz

Over large parts of the UK, global warming means that heatwaves are 3-4°C warmer, with worse consequences for people and ecosystems.

The alps have warmed extremely - as can be seen here in the data from #Innsbruck. Warm years are dominant since the 90s, cold years disappear. Massive glacier melting is only one consequence.

On the day the @metoffice.gov.uk publish a new paper showing a rapidly increasing chance of 40°C days in the UK, the GFS produces a forecast ensemble member showing 43°C in a couple of weeks time. This is an extremely unlikely outcome but highlights that these types of temperature are now plausible.

The climate is changing so fast that we haven’t seen how bad extreme weather could get Record heat, storms and floods reveal new extremes made possible by climate change.

Some forecast models are showing the potential for record-breaking heat in the UK later in June 🌡️
