207/500 Eagles-Eagles. Some iconic songs, a blend of country and rock that had become lessened by its ease of access and ubiquitous presence, but listen again and it’s really quite wonderful. #500best2020 #bestalbums

208/500 Lil Wayne-Tha Carter III. On a positive it’s the best of the three tha carter albums in the countdown. It’s not a good record though, still too full of the worst bits of modern hip hop and missing the poetry and fun that marked the early days. Don’t bother. #500best2020 #BestAlbums

209/500 Public Enemy-Raising Hell. The early days of self aggrandisement in hip hop were earlier than I remember, but at least this has poetry and humour… obviously the track with Aerosmith is a favourite but Tricky is awesome too! #BestAlbums #500best2020

213/500 Fiona Apple-The Idler Wheel… not an album necessarily meant for middle aged men, however, unlike many others where I’m not the demographic, this bridged the divide. It does that bully being interesting, insightful and clever. #500best2020 #BestAlbums

214/500 Tom Petty-Wildflowers. Ironically, of the Tim petty albums we’ve had so far this is my least favourite. The songs are still good, it still sounds like it’s from a time before its release but it’s a little over long and there isn’t the excitement. #500best2020 #BestAlbums

216/500 Elliott Smith-Either/Or. I can see why this is here. It’s full of songs that people will find life changing. I didn’t, at least on first listen, but can see that they could be. At its best when he is a bit more full voiced in his singing. #500best2020 #BestAlbums

It’s also an example of the music that was made in the era that started this hugely deluded era of British exceptionalism.

217/500 Oasis-Definitely Maybe. I don’t know what to say. So many people will think I’m wrong but I think this is a terrible triumph of attitude over everything. The only positive I have is their self belief, but otherwise it’s derivative and disappointing. #500best2020 #bestalbums

218/500 TLC-Crazy Sexy Cool. A record very much of its time, with stupid asides between the songs, a little over long and all top and bottom on the mix. High point-Waterfalls (other than the rap which pulls you away). Otherwise it’s girl power in a different way, one less manufactured. #bestalbums

219/500 Raekwon-Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. I don’t think this is very good. It’s all face and no soul. There’s a point where someone sings so terribly, you at first think it’s a parody of dodgy soul singers. I don’t think it is. I’m also over all the kung fu film references. #BestAlbums #500best2020

220/500 Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young-Deja Vu. Great songs. Great performances. Neil Young’s guitar. It’s alive with the west coast sound of its time and is pretty damn special. #500best2020 #BestAlbums

221/500 Rage Against the Machine-Rage Against the Machine. That’s a pretty good description for the band. Rage. They’re angry at the status quo, against all that keeps the small man down. It comes across effectively and excitingly. A good record. #bestalbums #500best2020

222/500 Madonna-Ray Of Light. Madonna meets Orbit and produces the most musically interesting work of her career. It's a bit overlong, but then people at the time did think you needed to fill the whole CD. It's well worth exploring. #500best2020 #BestAlbums

223/500 John Lennon-Imagine. I like this one. Some of johns best songs and while it doesn’t match what he did with Paul it still has moments that really fizzle. Only the third best version of Jealous Guy though. #500best2020 #BestAlbums

224/500 Dixie Chicks-Fly. Overly generic Americana that isn’t quite as click tracked as Shania but all the god bothering gun talk and the like just doesn’t connect with a Londoner like me. Competent at least. #500best2020 #BestAlbums
