A graduate wearing the official academic costume of the University of the Philippines (UP), known as the “Sablay”. This handwoven, sash-like garment is draped over one shoulder, in place of the traditional toga and mortarboard. The garment features a dominant maroon base, accented with green and gold bands, representing the university’s colors. Along the edges run intricate geometric patterns, including a repeating blue-and-gold diamond motif, inspired by design elements common across Filipino cultural groups. At the center of the maroon band is a vertically arranged, stylized rendering of the university’s acronym “UP” in baybayin, an ancient Filipino script, meticulously handwoven in bright gold. The graduate wears the Sablay over a cream-colored Barong Tagalog, a traditional formal Filipino attire.

Nagtapos din! Earlier this month, I officially received my Master’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the University of the Philippines at Diliman.

Microbiology will always be one of the most satisfying fields of natural science. Nigh-infinite levels of biodiversity, perpetual room for novel findings, and an evergreen requirement for the advancement of human civilization. 10/10. Big fan. Would recommend.
