She was actually paid to stay and for all the follow ups. Not alot, but she had 4 kids at home, so it helped.
Also, I had a sister that nearly died of pertussis (whooping cough) as she was too young to be vaccinated and must've come in contact with another kid that was not.

My mother got diphtheria in 1959. She probably would have died, but for being vaccinated. She was kept in isolation for over a week. Not because she was too sick, but because they did 100s of tests & paraded 1,000s of doctors to actually SEE a real case. She was studied on follow up for YEARS...
