"Dipped" was how they colorized most. Technicolor stamped it on so that's how they avoided the optical track. That release of Metropolis wanted to keep the color old fashioned looking (just the dipped and stenciled look) ....

Oh !!! I saw that one on the big screen with live piano music at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and it was SO MUCH FUN !!!
