Whether it's students at Oberlin asking for trigger warnings or the Department of Justice opening an investigation into George Mason faculty who criticize Trump, both sides have taken brazen steps to limit free speech at universities.

Evaluating the impact of two decades of USAID interventions and projecting the effects of defunding on mortality up to 2030: a retrospective impact evaluation and forecasting analysis USAID funding has significantly contributed to the reduction in adult and child mortality across low-income and middle-income countries over the past two decades. Our estimates show that, unless the a...

Elon Musk casually, and illegally, dismantled USAID. According to a new study in the Lancet, that action will lead to *14 million* premature deaths between 2025 and 2030.

Again: Elon Musk is directly responsible for 14 million coming deaths. 4.5 million will be children.

The emotional toll of climate change is broad-ranging, especially for young people Anxiety, grief, sadness, anger. The emotional toll of climate change is broad-ranging, especially for young people.

Are the climate crisis & the lack of action by our leaders making you feel anxious?

The best antidote is action. Get out into your community in person or online, meet like-minded people, and take action in whatever way that means for you!

There’s a role for everyone in the climate movement.

Anyone in OR, WA, or CA can get earthquake early warning alerts on their phones! The ShakeAlert System can detect earthquakes and alert people in impacted areas before shaking arrives. ~600 PNSN seismic stations send real-time ground motion data to #ShakeAlert #EEW.

The global aid sector is quite literally on the brink of death right now and the human fallout globally is already obscene and will keep getting much, much worse.

People in the U.S. need to be far more aware of this - and angry - than they currently are.

ICE just arrested Brad Lander, the NYC Comptroller and one of the leading candidates for Mayor, without grounds.

He was conducting routine immigration court work, escorting individuals from hearings.

He asked ICE for their warrant - well within his legal rights.

This is political intimidation.

“Rubber bullet” is an intentional euphemism. The British came up with them to control IRA protests and called them rubber to make them sound nicer. For crowd control, they are absolutely not supposed to be fired directly at people, you’re supposed to shoot at the ground or a wall to ricochet.

I think it's important to continuously reiterate that federal science funding grants in the US (and elsewhere) are made because the government, with the input of panels of independent experts, have concluded that the work being done is IN THE INTEREST OF THE NATION.

Post to the subreddit r/AskHistorians:

What was navigation like for vehicle drivers in the United States before the internet and
GPS?

Before GPS devices and smartphones/cellular internet networks were a thing (Garmin company was founded 1989), millions of Americans were already getting around driving without the use of those inventions. How did they navigate? Did everyone need stacks of maps? Were drivers frequently lost? Did everyone have to understand the interstate system and use intuition to guide them? How burdensome was driving before GPS? Did drivers pay people to calculate an optimal route for them?

Many others are posting abt this too but this graphic viscerally shows how dire the presidential budget is for NASA 🔭🧪and worldwide astronomy. I can’t express how sad this makes me, as an American scientist. And it’s mostly already paid for projects, so also no logic in terms of saving money.

Yes exactly. People are distrustful of the complexity of systems that they can't understand but enjoy the benefits such systems provide. This simple fact explains 90% of our current moment.
