A male white-breasted nuthatch clings to the side of a spruce tree trunk. The background is a warm orange brown of some out of focus branches. He has a very dark black cap and necklace (shows he’s a male) and a beautiful blue/grey back. We can just see the rust coloured feathers on his rump.

We have a few red-breasted nuthatches this winter and the yard is filled with their nasally beeps.
But there is occasionally a slightly louder nasally beep and it belongs to this guy!
This male White-breasted nuthatch was in today checking out the spruce trees for snacks!

I typically have a hard time telling the Downy Woodpeckers apart, but this lovely one has very big white stripes on her noggin so she's easy to pick out.
