Ah thanks!
Last outdoor painting for February!
Older panorama painting I’m currently using as color reference for a paleoart piece! #oilpainting #pleinairpaint
Some cool rocks captured in oil paint earlier today- taking advantage of the brief period of snowy mountains here in LA ❄️
Well and truly- whenever someone asks my opinion of any animated work or game these days, I just say “I think it employed a lot of people for a good amount of time, and that’s more than can be said for most attempts lately”.
Drew the new spinosaurus! And the old one while I was at it!

Had to join in on the mirabilis hype train. I’ve been aiming to come up with a spinosaurus composition for a while, and this was a good excuse to finally commit. Including some process steps in the thread! #paleosky #spinosaurusmirabilis #dinosaurart
illustrationart.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-... I was really inspired years ago seeing rough compositions from Howard Pyle’s own sketchbook; you can see how he focused primarily on the underlying design of a composition before even considering any representational element.
Oh right on, so happy to read this was helpful! Yeah I doodle rough and sketchy compositions all the time to work through an idea before committing to a finish- if something feels good in a small sketch, then it definitely has the staying power to be a good painting!
Thanks so much!
Ah thank you!
Ahaha that’s how I described it to a friend as well; “yes there’s technically a unicorn dinosaur, no, it’s not at all how you picture it.”
Oh man love how you handled the feathers especially!
The initial sketchbook thumbnail and the digital rough sketches I made to work through the pose!

I, too, would like to have a go at the new Spinosaurus soon, but in the meantime:
Here's a slide from my recent talk, which covers the DOs and DON'Ts of restoring ginkgoes within palaeoart!
Enjoy! #Ginkgo #FossilFriday #paleobotany #paleoart #SciComm
More weirdness.
Animators, i want to remind you that like 10 or 15 years ago there was a wage-fixing conspiracy involving 3 major studios, and they were found guilty in court and had to pay affected employees, but our rates never recovered.
We have to make them pay all of us more than the minimum, when it pops.
Yuuup. Felt so special in the new employee orientation after that 🥰
I think about this far too often- when I started at DreamWorks a few years back, told a friend my rate, and then he told me he was paid about the same when he started…over 12 years before that point 🫠
Ah thank you! It’s fun to get to change up aspect ratios by combining canvases!
Ahaha yeah quite an unusual set of “winter” scenes but reflective of my time in Florida and Southern California!
Gorgeous!
January’s outdoor paintings! Mostly done on the Petite Paintbox using a selfie tripod as a base- very light and portable set up perfect for longer hikes! #oilpainting #pleinairpainting
