Archaeology, travelling, Greece, rugby, Wrexham, shouting at the tv.
Done!
29.07.2025 16:46 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Well that is a fascinating hypothesis, and (as a complete amateur) far more credible than the measuring tool suggestion. Thank you for sharing this link.
28.07.2025 11:04 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Indeed. And the sofas set at right angles to the tv are rather confusing too...
23.06.2025 19:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks for sharing this - so much useful & interesting information that really helps in understanding the stele.
Have a grand time at the re-opening; I'll look forward to seeing your photos of the Combat Agate!
I was rather anxious about the Getty exhibition - there didn't seem to be much time for the exhibits to get back to Bulgaria, but everything was back on display. Although some of our group were very confused by a funeral stele in Nessebar which was still lying on the floor...
22.06.2025 21:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0You are right! There are two doors, one with a Medusa & the other with what looks like a Helios, and the picture I chose to post is the Helios - well spotted!

Sorry I'm arriving on this fascinating thread a bit late! I saw an almost identical coin in the marvellous Labyrinth Exhibition at the Ashmolean a couple of years ago. Here are some photos of it (number 2) plus another coin (1) showing the Labyrinth & the Minotaur; also a tile stamp of the Labyrinth
22.06.2025 18:38 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I saw this wonderful artefact when the Landesmuseum was kind enough to loan it to the British Museum for their "World of Stonehenge" exhibition recently.
I'd always wanted to see it & it is quite marvellous.
The Butt du Lion! Seriously steep, that hill.
18.06.2025 11:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Max isn't going to go back down - here's some of the lyrics of Duw it's Hard:
And now I know those dusty mines
Have seen the last of me
'Cause it's hard
Duw it's hard
Harder than they will ever know
Small fragment of a fresco, with two heads wearing boars-tusk helmets against a light-blue background.
Here's a lovely little fragment of wall-painting (dated 1345 - 1240 BCE) showing two warriors wearing the same style of helmet, from that same exhibition.
08.06.2025 08:32 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Good luck - I hope you cab resolve it quickly & easily!

Bronze portrait head of Seuthes in a glass display case. He has a large moustache, and long beard.

Located in the Golgama Kosmatka Tumulus near Kazanlak in modern day #Bulgaria.
His famous bronze portrait head can be seen in the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia.
It's not much fun. If you haven't tried Voltarol for your shoulder I strongly recommend it. My brother suggested I try it, and I was really surprised (& pleased!) by the pain relief that it gave.
30.05.2025 21:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I have mommy thumb - although since I'm a 71 year-old bloke, mine is obviously the far more important-sounding de Quervain's tenosynovitis!
30.05.2025 21:29 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Good luck! you can do this!
25.05.2025 13:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That sounds brilliant. I'm in London and I've no plans to visit the Getty, but I'm certainly hoping that whatever display technique they devise comes back with the agate so that I can get a better view of it in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens early next year.
21.05.2025 07:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Wonderful! I went to Kalamata just to see the agate. It was displayed in context with many other finds, and space limitations in the museum there meant that you couldnβt get close to it. Iβve been assured that in the Getty you will be able to get much closer for a great view - Iβm jealous!
20.05.2025 21:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The Pylos exhibition has some fantastic artefacts, including the magnificent Pylos Combat Agate: go & see it if you can!
20.05.2025 20:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That's excellent news!
20.05.2025 20:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The restoration has been in progress for a while - when I visited in February you could see inside, as they had removed one part of the sarcophagus
20.05.2025 20:11 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Amazing tile! I think you have a typo. Perhaps "now part of the collections" rather than "not part of the collections"?
20.05.2025 17:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Grand start!
14.05.2025 19:06 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'll be watching once I've finished my dinner!
14.05.2025 19:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0and the museum galleries were closed early - I can only assume as part of the preparations...
14.05.2025 10:04 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0He was a fine player. In the next round of that cup run we lost 1:0 at Burnley. Smallman played Arfon Griffiths in one-on-one with their keeper, and he saved it. We all wished it had been Griffiths playing in Smallman - we knew he'd have scored.
13.05.2025 07:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I remember Smallman - he scored the winner when we won at the Dell in our cup run in 73/74. I think he went to Everton but got badly injured soon after
13.05.2025 06:59 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I was there last week! Here are a few more of the fine horses
02.05.2025 13:25 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0#MosaicMonday These ones are in the superb Bishopβs Basilica of Philippopalis (modern day Plovdiv, Bulgaria)
28.04.2025 10:39 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0I hope you've been to Sicily? Ice cream and a bun (officially Granita & brioche) is a standard for breakfast there!
