Leopard seals sing 13-hour nursery-rhyme sets underwater.
The vocal patterns are predictable & orderly, closely resembling the rhythmic repetition found in human song.
Song structure improves the ability of distant listeners to receive signals & identify singers.

I completely agree! And something we've been trying to cultivate with our collaborative model of peer review at @stacksjournal.bsky.social.
29.07.2025 21:33 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0These are words to live by and what should be, or become, the core philosophy of reviewing!
28.07.2025 21:58 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes! And the incidence of βblockingβ reviews, which are challenging to explain to ECRs as a constructive part of scientific processes, would likely decline.
I am honestly not sure what the βrightβ way to evolve peer review is. Transparency has to an ingredient. Rapid evolution clearly needed.
Learning a lot from reading this paper. Thanks for posting this - I might have missed this one otherwise.

A very small bird, an American Redstart, perched on a lichen-covered branch. The bird is black and orange on top.
American redstart pausing briefly to check out a birder with a big camera. Otherwise, singing up a storm and hoping to defend his territory. Mud lake, #ottawa.

Also known as the black-backed jackal, these canids are closely related to wild dogs. Another jackal, the golden jackal, was recently shown to be more closely related to wolves, and is now known as the golden wolf. Like a lot of other canid species, jackals are clever and curious.
