A perched member of the family enjoying the security and view from a cupboard. Brilliantly coloured male parrot!

There is a Senegal Parrot in my cupboard. Meet Tango the Rescue birb, who has become an extremely cheerful and super social little flirt. Not a talker but very communicative. Like parrots in general, he is not domesticated.

I think of Ansel Adams and the wonders he captured generations ago when I think I need better tech to be a better photographer.

Still, amazing tech these days gives me a leg up that my relatively limited talents and limited time for practice cannot replace.

Reverend Jesse Jackson called on each of us to be heralds of change, to be messengers of hope; to step forward and say “Send me” wherever we have a chance to make an impact.

How fortunate we were that Jesse Jackson answered that call. What a great debt we owe to him.

My parrot would like nothing better than a gentle foot tap but I’d have some serious toe punctures to remember the incident by. He is a tiny, lethal velociraptor when feet are around.

A heavily built predatory bird that spends most of its time hunting for little vertebrates in grasslands of east Africa, the Kori Bustard.

Another of today’s #birdsInTheirElement, a Kori Bustard strolling through the dry grasses of Ngorongoro Crater. These are the largest birds in the world that are still capable of flight. #birds #birdOfTheDay #wildlife #photography #nature #nikon #africa

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

A global map showing that most people don't talk about or hear about climate change regularly (except in Scandinavia - I believe this is the Greta Effect!). Most people are worried about climate change - but most don't hear or talk about regularly.

That's why I started my free newsletter Talking Climate. Every week I share good news, not so good news, and what people can do.

If you aren't a reader yet, see below. I have 6 different ways to subscribe!

Australian tropical rainforest trees switch in world first from carbon sink to emissions source Researchers say carbon emissions change in Queensland tropical rainforests may have global climate implications

This research paper is the first time that a tipping point of a switch from a carbon sink to a carbon emission source in tropical rainforests has been identified clearly – not just for one year but for the last 20 years. Cause is a change in the local climate. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Common loon paddling across a calm lake on a summer day

Common loon cruising on Kingsford Lake by Frontenac Provincial Park. Saw this fellow from a kayak, where I precariously balanced a heavy camera and lens. The loon had one foot out of the water, oddly.
