Bread from seagrass? Cultivating grains in the ocean could be an elegant solution to rising seas. Farmed at scale, seagrass meadows could produce grain in quantities equivalent to 7% of global rice production, a new study finds.

A new paper suggests that cultivating seagrass would match about 7% of worldwide rice crops with almost no carbon footprint. Eelgrass seeds are a staple food in some indigenous cultures (even used to make bread) and could be an option to help feed the world in the face of future sea level rise.
