Three individuals are working in a wetland area, clearing aquatic vegetation with rakes. They are dressed in waders and are surrounded by a natural landscape with a grass embankment, reeds, and cloudy skies above.

Bollin Valley Rangers Dan and Emma and a team of staff and volunteers from Mersey Rivers Trust undertook a pond maintenance day recently. They were clearing some invasive pondweed from the main pond on Bluebell Meadow at Macclesfield Riverside Park. Thanks to all for their help!

A sparrowhawk is perched on the branches of a leafless tree against a clear blue sky. The bird has brown feathers with some white markings, and its sharp gaze is directed forward. The bark of the tree is rough and textured.

Regular runner Ruth, and her dog Molly, enjoyed some excellent views of this Sparrowhawk last week on the Middlewood Way. Sparrowhawks are a small bird of prey that specialise in hunting other birds in confined spaces like dense woodlands. Find out more on the RSPB website - https://bit.ly/3StX2FW

A group of people standing outdoors in a wooded area, holding tools and branches, suggesting a community or conservation activity. They are dressed in casual clothing suitable for outdoor work. The background features trees and a clear sky. The image shows a landscape with several freshly cut tree stumps scattered across a muddy and leaf-strewn ground. Bare trees and bushes line the area, and power lines are visible overhead against a cloudy sky. A person wearing a gray hoodie and gloves is planting a young tree and securing it with a wooden stake in a grassy area. A person is planting a young tree sapling in a grassy area surrounded by woods. The sapling is supported by wooden stakes and the ground is covered with mulch. A shovel lies nearby. The person is wearing a hood and gloves.

Volunteers from AstraZeneca have been helping Bollin Valley Partnership Ranger Dan to coppice Hazel at Macclesfield Riverside Park. Coppicing involves cutting trees at their base to create a 'stool' where many new shoots will grow. The group also planted some apple and plum fruit trees.

A small muddy pond is surrounded by bare trees and patches of grass under a clear blue sky. Some clothing or fabric items are on a nearby bench. The setting appears to be a quiet, rural area. A person stands on muddy ground holding a spade, surrounded by leafless trees and dense shrubs on a clear day. A person is standing on muddy ground in a wooded area, spreading seeds or feed from a bag. They are wearing a purple hat, dark clothing, and boots. A shovel and spade are stuck in the ground nearby.

Bollin Valley Partnership Rangers Umar, Emma & Nik along with Amara & Abi from Mersey Rivers Trust recently planted trees & sowed wildflower seeds around a new pond/scrape site at Rossmill in Trafford as a part of a project to create & improve wetland areas in the Bollin Valley catchment.

Brushcutter machine on the ground in a heathland on a sunny day

A few weeks ago, Rangers Martin and Roger, plus our regular Tegg’s Nose Country Park volunteers, were performing our annual Heather and Bilberry cut at the top of the park. Selectively strimming older plants, in ungrazed areas, encourages new growth and extends their life.
