Bollin Valley Rangers Dan and Emma and a team of staff and volunteers from Mersey Rivers Trust undertook a pond maintenance day recently. They were clearing some invasive pondweed from the main pond on Bluebell Meadow at Macclesfield Riverside Park. Thanks to all for their help!

Regular runner Ruth, and her dog Molly, enjoyed some excellent views of this Sparrowhawk last week on the Middlewood Way. Sparrowhawks are a small bird of prey that specialise in hunting other birds in confined spaces like dense woodlands. Find out more on the RSPB website - https://bit.ly/3StX2FW

Timbersbrook toad patrol has had an early start with the mild February weather. Rangers & volunteers have been out searching the roads around the village after dusk for toads (& frogs & newts) to try and prevent them from being run over by cars on their way to their breeding pool

A big THANK YOU from Ranger Martin to the team from South Manchester Conservation Volunteers who joined him on the southern slopes of Tegg's Nose Country Park on Sunday, to help with our last heathland restoration work of the winter. Scrub is removed to encourage heather and bilberry to return.

Rangers have been enjoying views of Goosander, at or near some of our countryside sites. Ranger Martin has seen them on the reservoirs below Tegg's Nose & Bollin Valley Ranger Umar has spotted them at Wilmslow Park. The males have a green head while females have a brown head.
Volunteers from AstraZeneca have been helping Bollin Valley Partnership Ranger Dan to coppice Hazel at Macclesfield Riverside Park. Coppicing involves cutting trees at their base to create a 'stool' where many new shoots will grow. The group also planted some apple and plum fruit trees.

Bollin Valley Partnership Rangers Umar, Emma & Nik along with Amara & Abi from Mersey Rivers Trust recently planted trees & sowed wildflower seeds around a new pond/scrape site at Rossmill in Trafford as a part of a project to create & improve wetland areas in the Bollin Valley catchment.

A few weeks ago, Rangers Martin and Roger, plus our regular Tegg’s Nose Country Park volunteers, were performing our annual Heather and Bilberry cut at the top of the park. Selectively strimming older plants, in ungrazed areas, encourages new growth and extends their life.
