US has never been overenthusiastic about coming to the aid of Europe. The US entered WW1 on 6th April 1917 and WW2 on 8th December, 1941. I don't need to remind you that NATO's Article 5 has only been used once, to assist the US after 911. A Europe+ version of NATO should be far more effective.
