sorry for yapping, this particular overlap of children's safety vs privacy rights of internet users lacks perspective of the lives parents exist in. I saw first hand how overworked, overtired, strung out parents are. More often than not, once told about normal child lock options, they took those
in the pursuit of internet privacy. The same privacy that can protect adult creators/general internet users can protect children or anyone who doesn't want to interact with it. Policy makers know this, they dont care bc it's not their actual goal.
if a perfectly reasonable desire, and more often than not, they just want *options* and education on it. As a teacher, I PROMISE more parents want to be involved, but the same things that keep us artists from thriving in capitalistic hell, they have + children. They are potential allies, not enemies
Not to beat this horse in particular, but so often parents just *do not know* what they can do. They have jobs, raise kids, daily lives, it is insane to expect them to always know what even to look for, internet savvy or not. Providing resources to them to identify dangerous online activity--
The invisible ‘pearl clutching white suburban mother who doesn’t know what Roblox is’ stereotype is to also redirect you from who you should actually be mad at. They at least do not know anything; our literal supervillains for government bodies do.
Do not fall into the red herring that is “parents don’t want to do their jobs, that’s why this is happening”. They are an unbelievably small category who more often than not have more complicated viewpoints than you’d think. They are a scapegoat. Dumb parents are not your enemy.
And understand that christofascism depends on the abuse and manipulation of children. They genuinely want to make things worse and more confusing to put people in a confused satanic panic. They blab on TV about weird furry drawings and then brush our government leaders trafficking ring under the rug
Its even more frustrating because it isn’t the reason they actually do all this. They see Twitters built in AI capable of creating NSFW using real images of minors and shrug, but private chat platforms that are caked in adult warnings and accurate labels? It’s christofascism.
