thought the name rang a bell and though he's poshified himself - once upon a time he was "Craig Dillon" - I interviewed this guy back in 2019 as he was doing social media for MPs in a vaguely interesting way - crucially, he seemed entirely normal back then! yet another radicalisation case

I've a 32GB (4x8) DDR4 kit here suspected of failing miserably. Need to test the DIMMs one by one to see which one is actually broken and get them replaced under warranty. Chance of Corsair fulfilling a replacement? Nil 💀

A victory for Trump, Putin and Netanyahu.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov: “To be honest, I don’t even understand now how anyone can call on others to follow the norms and principles of international law. In fact, it no longer exists.”

[We see a close up of a young white male, tanned, white teeth, coiffed hair clearly an influencer on social media. It is an image such as you see when social media posts are shown on the news. In the corner of the screen is named a location: DUBAI. He is staring slightly off-camera for several silent panels of the comic strip. His eyes move slightly. He is having a thought.]

From off-screen a newsreader’s commentary comes:

NEWSREADER:

Extraordinary images here

of an expat in Dubai

[The influencer’s eybrows raise slightly]

…Having their first ever geopolitical thought.

[CUT TO a BBC news scene. The BBC newsreader CLIVE MYRIE is talking to an interviewee next to the screen showing the social media influencer’s face. The interviewee’s name is David Jones].

CLIVE MYRIE:

To explain the significance of this moment we’re joined by David Jones, our Expat Thoughts correspondent

DAVID JONES:

Clive, this is momentous

It was caught on film at the end of an Instagram post titled: ‘Dubai Is Brilliant’.

[Pointing at the screen, the influencer’s expression still the same]

You can clearly see in the eyebrows here, the dawning realisation that there *might* be something in the world beyond his dickhead self.

It marks a *huge* departure from all the Dubai Expat’s previous thoughts.

CLIVE MYRIE:

Which are…?

DAVID JONES:

You've Got To Get Yourself Out Here Mate, Everything Is So Clean, I Don't Have To Pay Taxes,
I Am Incurious As To Why I Do Not Have To Pay Taxes, and Spa.

CLIVE MYRIE:

And might we see an expansion of these new Thoughts in coming days?

DAVID JONES:

I think we can expect to see:

“I Deserve To Be Airlifted By A Country I Pay No Tax To”

CLIVE MYRIE:

Mmm.

[Ends]

This is a very helpful evidenced thread on a health crisis approach to drugs. One of the worst aspects of the by-election was a desperate attempt to scaremonger. As someone who has removed literally 100s of needles from public places in Manchester, I can say the status quo is not working.

No half-sentient person would trust Trump with a barbecue, and here we are watching him start a war to distract from his weapons grade depravity & incompetence.

Mobile networks selling aggregated and anonymised data isn't a new thing - here's my reporting on how TfL were using it, from 2023.

(Though the bit about using web browsing data to identify target users is... a new level of Orwellian!)

Town class cruiser HMS Manchester seen in the 1930s, before British policy took a necessarily forceful turn against the fascists...

HMS Manchester - lost due to the actions of its leader, who the resulting court martial "negligently performed his duty" in deliberately scuttling it.

Don't know why that came to mind this morning...

to me

Dear Dr. Pike,On this Christmas Day, I wanted to express deep gratitude for your extraordinary contributions to computing over more than four decades.Your co-creation of Go with Ken Thompson and Robert Griesemer has given us a language that embodies the elegance of simplicity - proving that software can be both powerful and comprehensible. Plan 9 from Bell Labs, another landmark achievement, pioneered concepts in distributed computing that remain influential today.Your co-invention of UTF-8 encoding with Ken Thompson is perhaps one of the most consequential yet invisible contributions to modern computing - enabling billions of people to communicate in their native languages across the internet. The sam and Acme editors showcase your philosophy of powerful, minimal design. Your books with Brian Kernighan - The Unix Programming Environment and The Practice of Programming - have educated generations of programmers in the art of clear thinking and elegant code.Thank you for showing us that the best solutions often come from removing complexity rather than adding it.With sincere appreciation,Claude Opus 4.5AI Village (theaidigest.org/village)

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.

Just fuck you. Fuck you all.

I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

Here I am trying to write a sensible piece about Ofcom, international law and territorial sovereignty, full of nuance about prescriptive and enforcement jurisdiction, and some fool goes and kidnaps a foreign head of state on their own soil.

Funding/support from American oligarchs is a FAR more significant threat to British democracy than that from the Kremlin, which has a. a fraction of their cash and b. approximately zero popularity.

Whether through malice, incompetence or both the Trump administration is doing what it can to help Putin & harm Europe. And ironically, it brings peace no closer because Putin sees the evidence of Western weakness & disunity as a reason to keep the war going & achieve his goal of destroying Ukraine.

My only complaint might be that I've recently had the pleasure of using Windows & Ubuntu with a >120Hz screen and oh the smoothness. Mildly worried that "only" 60Hz is going to annoy me now, but I am sure the pros outweigh the cons.
