A new report by the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change warns current policies are insufficient to address rising climate risks to the EU agri-food system & meet climate targets.

The report emphasizes that achieving climate neutrality while safeguarding food security will require a systemic transition away from livestock products across the entire agri-food system, supported by stronger policy incentives and targeted support for farmers. 8/8
The Board recommends ending coupled payments to livestock production and decoupled payments for peatland areas. This money can be used to support adaptation and structural change, including the move towards plant-based products. 7/
The ongoing revision of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) presents an opportunity to align agricultural policy with climate goals.
Today, the CAP subsidizes the most greenhouse-gas intensive practices, incl. cattle farming and the draining of peatlands. It thus undermines EU climate goals.
6/
Agriculture is very dependent on oil to power machinery and gas to produce nitrogen fertilizer. Rising oil prices mean rising food production costs. Cutting this fossil fuel dependency has benefits beyond climate change. 5/
Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture will also require significant changes, including reducing fossil fuel use in machinery and fertilizer production and lowering methane and nitrous oxide emissions from livestock and fertilizers. Peatland needs to be protected. 4/
Adapting to climate change will require adjustments in planting patterns, pest control, irrigation, and water management, as well as avoiding farming in flood- and landslide-prone areas. In some regions agriculture may become increasingly difficult, and adaptation has to reflect local conditions. 3/
Food production is increasingly exposed to droughts, floods, heatwaves, and disease outbreaks. Climate-related agricultural losses already amount to tens of billions of euros annually and are expected to rise significantly as Europe continues to warm faster than many other regions.
2/
The EU agri-food system is increasingly threatened by climate change while accounting for roughly one-third of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions. Current policies are insufficient to address rising climate risks and meet EU climate targets, according to EU climate advisors @esabcc.bsky.social.

Who will hold Israel accountable?
These school classes are part of a big social experiment. I very much look forward to the research finding!
Cool stuff. This is how social science should be done. And we should not engage in social experiments like locking up our kids with addictive devices, without having a control group. 2/2
I would like to applaud the 72000 Austrian pupils who lock away their mobile phone for three weeks as part of lent. Youths are well aware of the impact of social media.
We grown-ups should ensure that kids are not exposed to addictive content or pornography through their devices, any day.

But who will pay for it?
PPS: I have absolutely now sympathy for the killed Iranian leaderships of religious zealots and thugs. I do not feel sorry for their loss.
However, this should have done differently.
I cannot understand that we do not have more of a dialogue with Xi about the world order.

PS: The reference to 1930 comes from my current reading, Defying Hitler (Geschichte eines Deutschen), an intriguing memoir written 1939, which shows the uncanny parallels (and differences) to our time. 10/

The rising power today is a non-democratic country that sees it's own sovereignty as superior to that of weaker countries. A rules-based order that demand mutual respect among equals of all countries would at least be a normative constraint to real military/economic power. It is now gone!
9/
In 1930-32, German mainstream politicians torpedoed a rules-based order in the attempt to prevent Hitler taking power. Doing so, they in fact facilitated his rise, as there was nothing left to stop his takeover by the time he gained the leadership position as part of a coalition. 8/
Because, of course, our own leaders will also become legitimate targets if assassinations and capture of foreign leaders become the normal way of dealing with enemies. How will be recruit politicians? How will they be able to interact with broader groups of their citizens? 7/
Abducting one head of state, killing the leaders of another state subverts the basic tenets of International Relations, which were established by the peace of Westphalia of 1648. It ended Europe's 30-year war. How much more will we need to spend on security of our own heads of state now? 6/
In 2023, the lies about Weapons of Mass Destruction were a disgrace.
In 2026, the destruction of the international order is taken given. But it is not just the rules-based order that the US tried to put in place in the 20th century that the US seems to lightly give up. 5/
Still, what strikes me in all the news and analyses I have seen, is the absence of a global perspective. For the 2003 invasion of Iraq, there was at least an attempt to get international buy-in and to do this by the book, i.e. with UN Security Council support. 4/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_War
@timothysnyder.bsky.social and @phillipspobrien.bsky.social address several issues in detail which I have seen less attention to, such as the potential that other powers might be able to take advantage of the situation on the ground, and what it means for the US election. 3/
Like others, they point out that there is no clear plan and that air war cannot achieve regime change. The West was sitting by when 10s of thousands of courageous Iranians - potential future leaders - were killed. 2/
Of all the analyses of the US-Israeli war on Iran, I found the conversation of @phillipspobrien.bsky.social and @timothysnyder.bsky.social on Substack especially insightful and worthwhile. 1/
New advice from the @esabcc.bsky.social urges the EU to urgently strengthen its adaptation framework. With rising loss of life, damages and ecosystem harm, coordinated adaptation, alongside rapid mitigation, is crucial to address climate risks and protect EU's priorities: tinyurl.com/yc4dxw9r

I am disappointed that I was not reappointed for another term, but I understand that they could not have two white males from the same institute in the panel. Congratulations to the new members! I hope they will really put in the 1 day/week they have committed to!
House prices are exploding, making moving unaffordable and driving inflation. EE identifies the move by financial investors into the housing market, and rising wealth inequality as major causes. Limit billionaires' market access to support housing affordability and fight inflation.
