not entirely sure it's true either. The ruling (and dominant) party in Germany literally has "Christian" in its name

Meanwhile, in the real world, editors just say "don't use the word launch" and "get me pictures of Spiderman"

they also take a late May bank holiday for Ascension, though. Pentecost is in June (or was this year, anyway)

Bear in mind this is a country that gets a public holiday for pentecost. Pentecost! I'm sorry but nobody even knows what that is

Yes I think you're right! (though, coming back to the original question, there may be other factors that make the business case for crypto stronger in those places - privacy, risk of capital controls, etc)

04.07.2025 14:48 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

yes, I know! I just mean there are a number of payment innovations in a number of areas where the US trails Europe. (Instant payments, chip and PIN, credit card fees ...). And in each case, in my view, for similar reasons (regulation and the role of the state)

04.07.2025 13:12 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

my info may well be out of date! but there's a lot of metrics/areas where the US trails the EU here. (Agree the case for crypto as a solution is weak - but I think even weaker in Europe)

Indeed there aren’t trillion-dollar companies, there are boring but effective initiatives like FPS, Bancontact and the European payments council

04.07.2025 10:52 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I think it's an area where the European instinct for regulation / centralisation is genuinely helpful. The US seems to have an ideological problem with it.

04.07.2025 10:33 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Don't disagree. But the headline of this piece is that the stuck-in-the-mud innovation-fearing Europeans should take more lessons in how to do payments from the US, which I find hard to stomach

04.07.2025 09:08 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Like, there is (apparently) regulation, though enforcement was clearly lacking
