editor of the filmmagazine shomingeki: shomingeki.org, shomingekionline.org and shomingekiblog.blogspot.com I live in Berlin and among the living I adore the filmmaker Aparna Sen, terrence Malick and Hou Hsiao Hsien.
In Springsteen: Deliver me From Nowhere there actually two refences to Terrence Malick, the one obvious is on Badland, a film very known as an inspiration for Springsteen. But I loved even more the other the other quotation which refers to The Tree of Life.

and now for the occasion of Aparna Sens 80th. birthday today, I republish my long text on her masterpiece Mr. and Mrs. iyer
Like often, too much people are talking only about the sujet Springsteen, very few are writing about what the film offers us to see. I can say I was very sceptic before I saw the film while being tired of so much bad bio pics. But I was surprised how much I liked it.
25.10.2025 08:12 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0What I love or what moved me in Springsteen: Deliver me from Nowhere is not so much Springsteens struggle against his mental problems (which are well described in his autobiography. It is rather despite quoting films from terrence Malick and Charles Laughton, a very Ozu-like glance to details.

probably the greatest song and text on every day life of thze working class.
Beside Jeremy Allen White, Stephen Graham and Odessa Young are fantastic. You feel exacrly the people for whom Springsteen is writing and singing his songs.

Happy Birthday, Aparna Sen! Her incredible Journey as a filmmaker began 44 years ago with one of the finest film debut in the history of cinema.
‘…this is a fine, sensitive, intelligent film to be commended to Springsteen fans but also those who seek authenticity in life…Deliver Me From Nowhere lives up to the bleak, desperate, desolate title and gives us a Bruce Springsteen audiences can believe in….5/5
