I responded to a few questions from On Creative Writing. Check out the interview if you want to read a little bit about my inefficient writing process, my first-ever publication, and how my writing has evolved over the years. www.oncreativewriting.com/post/liz-joh...
Even if AI could write a novel what problem has been solved? The problem of knowing what you’re reading was written by another person? Who loves reading novels but hates the part where your mind briefly and mysteriously touched another?
I'm thrilled to have this excerpt featured in @wildroofjournal.bsky.social. Thank you!
Today we're highlighting a new novel! Liz Johnston's The Fall-Down Effect is an expansive and moving story about family, environmental activism, climate change, secrets, and loss, set in a small mountain town.

I keep seeing posts about ai models like "actually they're good at this thing now!"
but once you understand that ai tools are being built by fascists in service of attacks on humanity, whether or not they can generate useable code or do basic searches kind of stops being the main question
An excerpt from my forthcoming novel, The Fall-Down Effect: wildroofjournal.substack.com/p/the-fall-d...
Those with the most agency to reign in the AI death cultists are captured by delusion, willful ignorance, or self-interest. This tech has been unleashed without our consent by supremacist, anti-human nihilists. Individual action is insufficient. The market cannot stop them. We need political will!
Hear, hear!
Half of business owners on this Toronto street estimated that more than 25% of their customers arrived by car.
In fact, it was 4%.
And the % of customers who who walked or cycled? 72%.
Retailers routinely overestimate the # of “car customers.” Via @carltonreid.com www.forbes.com/sites/carlto...
Danielle Smith’s referendum questions aren’t about decision making; they’re about sowing discontent and conflict within her own province and (she hopes) in the country. If you want a referendum on separation, go ahead (she knows it will fail). But these questions? A chicken shit, divisive move.
The disappearance of YA book collections in public libraries–and the parallel winnowing of YA librarianship. Where are young people supposed to BE young people?
That, plus an extremely long roundup of censorship news: bookriot.com/the-disappea...

Apropos of nothing, I just learned platypuses are small little things, like 3 lbs or something. I'd always pictured something the size of an otter, if not a beaver. Is that just me? Is anyone else surprised they're not bigger?
Let Cuba live.
Incredible victory! After years of organizing across Canada, Scotia Bank has divested from Elbit Systems!
Elbit is Israel's largest weapons company, arming the occupation and genocide of Palestine.

It's very simple. Carney is cutting public sector jobs that contribute to public services and instead pushing private sector jobs in destructive industries like weapons and fossil fuels for the benefit of corporate profits. That is straight up conservative economic policy.
Thank you for writing it!
Meta is putting a "Name Tag" feature in Ray-Bans - facial recognition through the glasses' camera. You look at someone, AI tells you who they are.
In an internal document, the company wrote that the timing is good because civil society groups are busy with politics and won't cause problems.
In its ruling, the court said an earlier decision to ban the Pro-Palestinian group Palestine Action as a terrorist organization was "disproportionate." n.pr/4aj00Ws
Man I'm so goddamn sick of ai. "Wahhh you can't have a reasonable conversation about ai on here," yeah maybe be mad about the two year parade of scam artists and financial charlatans and environmental ruiners who have radicalized everyone against the spell check that agrees with you
The Great Lakes region is in the midst of a seismic energy shakeup, from skyrocketing data centre demand to a nuclear energy boom. Along with U.S. media partners, we’re kicking off a series on what this means for the lakes' water. thenarwhal.ca/energy-boom-...

Why do we only get the dystopian parts of Living in the Future™️
Also I’m sorry but I don’t think this is Claude developing a personality or ethical values. It is *simulating* those things because that is what humans value and reward. The programmers are falling for their own Clever Hans trick!
I was looking up Lydia Millet's A Children's Bible on @wikipedia.org for reasons that are unimportant, but I just had to share this line under "Development and Writing," which I find totally hilarious, not the line itself but just the fact that it's there: "Millet enjoyed writing the book."
Oh, thank you!
