Seattle. Previous owner was a hack.
But I figured out the mess.
Switched wire is red hot from a 12/3. Other half goes to dishwasher. Labeled the wire as red.
The other outlets… took out the 20a 2phase breaker, put in a single 15, and physically removed the red wires. Now I can GFCI it.
It’s the same on the downstream outlet. At least this one is grounded…
Okay so further investigation… the only reason it did not immediately explode my appliances… the break-offs are broken. So this outlet is on two circuits.
Can you believe that? The inspection had some hits on it but not this!
New house, new problems. What is going on here? Pure nightmare fuel. Red from a 12/3 connected to a white to the outlet… the “load” end connected to a black connected to two other wires… and the switch (on a different breaker of course) is white in-black out?

Just bought a house in Seattle! 1963 mid-century style with a pool and plenty of room.
It with new house ownership comes three things I’m good at but don’t look forward to:
1) fixing the electrical
2) drywall
3) building out the garage which never has the right electrical or storage…
