A lot of people I respect put a lot of time and effort into bringing this thing to fruition. I have high hopes for the new office , and I think (and always thought) the Defender General was a dunb, unworkable idea .

There are probably people who hope this new office will operate that way. And maybe it will? But before you go off publishing a think piece on the ethical or Appointments Clause implications, maybe just wait and see what the office will actually do

Some famous podcasters used to tweet longingly about the idea of a Defender General. These were primarily people who spent more time complaining about the quality of defense advocacy than actually advocating for defendants.

Either much of the reporting & discussion about the new Defenders’ Supreme Court Advocacy Project is inaccurate, or what they told appellate defenders is inaccurate. I guess time will tell. 🤷🏻‍♂️
