In yet another instance of the data centre industry’s shocking disregard for transparency and accountability, Microsoft denied a UN expert access to their data centre facility in Dublin. Find out more in our blog👇

Jerry McEvilly, @foeireland.bsky.social at PLS hearings:
“The choice before the committee is whether energy security is pursued in a way that strengthens climate law and public trust or undermines both”
Their report is due soon - urge them to protect the climate!

5/ We are faced with a situation where the cure seems to be worse than the symptom. Instead of locking ourselves into more dirty & volatile fossil fuels, decision makers should be putting brakes on Big Tech's power grab, and building an energy system to serves public need over corporate profit.
4/ Burning more and more gas so we can keep the lights on for DCs is hurting us economically too. We have often written about how households pay for this added back-up gas, and injustice of foisting this cost onto the public during a cost of living crisis.

3/ Not only is this at odds with our climate commitments and our urgent need to reduce pollution, but it is stopping us from building a cleaner indigenous energy system that is not as exposed to geopolitical shifts and gas imports.
2/ While the Regulator has said mitigation measures have been in place to address the risk that data centre's colossal energy demand is placing on our energy system, the mitigation is more gas and fossil fuels.
1/ CRU's recent report clearly states that energy demand from data centres is a major risk for Ireland's energy system with "inadequate capacity to supply this demand." This could mean energy shortages for the rest of us while Big Tech grows its portfolio.

🌍Come share your interests, connect, and see what we do
🌍We will share more details about our upcoming book club soon!
We’d love to see you on the 28th! 💚
2/ Come see how you can get involved and - for those interested - join the Dublin Friends of the Earth committee :) Help shape our activities and make a real difference!

1/ Dublin Friends of the Earth is our local network group in Dublin.
Next week, they are having their AGM and if you'd like to learn more please drop by.
When: Wednesday, 28th January, 6.30-8pm.
Where: Friends of the Earth office, 9 Mount Street Upper (please note - not wheelchair accessible)
7/ We reiterate our position that only by reducing the unlimited rise of one the largest energy users in the State that we can decarbonise our grid in a way that puts fairness, climate goals and affordability for households at the centre of the energy transition.
6/ Friends of the Earth calls on the Government to grasp the issue at the root and tackle rising energy demand and fossil fuel lock-in by issuing a moratorium on data centre expansion in Ireland.
5/ The Private Wires legislation may undermine the Government’s own climate law and carbon budgets, and risk wreaking more havoc on our lives and livelihoods through increased fossil fuel extraction at the exact moment when we urgently need to decrease it.
4/ Instead, the policy risks locking-in greater fossil fuel dependency and could amount to a corporate capture of renewables. The policy risks undermining public trust in the energy transition and risks increasing people’s bills.
3/ The Government’s Private Wires proposal looks like it could lead to the worst of both worlds: creating a back door for data centres to expand fossil fuel networks, and diverting resources needed for a fair energy transition away from the public good.
2/ Friends of the Earth believes that this policy will intensify the inequality in our energy system, and does nothing to limit the energy demand of large users, namely data centres, who now account for 22% of Ireland’s electricity consumption, a 400% increase over 10 years.
1/ New policy enabling private electricity lines risks entrenching fossil fuel use and increasing electricity costs, primarily to benefit data centres.
Thank you for your kind and loyal support this year. It means so much in making our work possible.
Wishing you a restful and joyful winter break, from all the team at Friends of the Earth.
Season's Greetings!
We strongly reject the CRU’s suggestion that climate law does not give it the remit to enforce pollution limits.
And renewable energy should be prioritised for public good, especially housing and transport, not for new data centre demand.
