i was there for the original wave of pokemania, and it was popular, absolutely, but my mom and i rarely ran into issues with overpaying for anything
id say the bigger change is the internet—now that there are so many marketplaces and avenues to buy/flip/show off, it makes it all much harder to avoid
that’s funny bc i feel like pokemon is the worst it’s been since this recent resurge happened
a 151 etb is currently being valued at 4 digits. it’s supposed to be $60 😭
a scalper is someone who’ll buy as much of a product as they can and flip it for profit due to the scarcity they cause, which answers your second question—you can’t buy them elsewhere, bc some asshole’s snatched em all up
i think the thing about 90s pokemania was that it was new, it was fresh, it appealed to a bunch of different people, and we existed under a kind of monoculture. we don’t have that anymore, and rather than this fervor to collect them all, it’s primarily about snatching what you can to flip for profit
