Why is Calgary Council Pushing to Annex 415 Acres for One Short Road?
YouTube video by Myke Atkinson Why is Calgary Council Pushing to Annex 415 Acres for One Short Road?

Calgary already has decades of developable land inside its boundaries.
So why is Council restarting annexation talks for 415 acres in Foothills County, just to pave one short road?

Every time we grow, it costs more and pulls focus from the neighbourhoods we already have.

If we throw that β€œactually” into the name doesn’t it now become the 6A network?

I’m down for the change to the β€œactually always accessible for all ages and abilities” of it gets us one more A’s worth of funding (actually…). πŸ˜†

Scooter parking is interesting too as a way to help with clutter on the sidewalks.

Does anyone in #yycbike know of anywhere in Calgary where bike racks have been installed in 5m no-parking-zone around crosswalks/intersections to provide better intersection daylighting for pedestrians and bike lockup at the same time (and way cheaper than curb bump outs)?

It’s not necessarily about revoking (we do need protections for our tree canopy), but making sure the bylaw is right-sized to enable the desired outcomes. For example, are there creative solutions like pool noodle protections that can meet the needs of both tree protection and neighbourhood play?

What’s the best thing you’ve seen a neighbour do to bring life to your street?
🌱 Garden in the boulevard?

🧚 Fairy houses?
🎨 Public art?

Let’s swap ideas on how make Calgary streets more fun, friendly, and connected.

Bylaws Should Make Space for Joy
YouTube video by Myke Atkinson Bylaws Should Make Space for Joy

A swing. Sidewalk chalk. Kids laughing before school. That’s what community *should* look like.

Bylaws should protect what matters, but they should also make space for joy, connection, and creativity in our neighbourhoods.

The Stampede’s over. So why is the skate park still closed?
YouTube video by Myke Atkinson The Stampede’s over. So why is the skate park still closed?

Millennium Park was handed over for 10 days β€” but the impact will last much longer.

We need transparency and accountability, and we need our park back.

Let’s not let this become the blueprint for the next 9 years.

Cyclists can travel in either direction on roads that don’t have cycling infrastructure. The pedestrian experience is better on roads rather than thoroughfares - pedestrians are prioritized and designed for differently when you’re trying to run as much traffic through as possible like with one-ways.

πŸ‘ But we have to be careful to not base these kinds of decisions on traffic volume alone. It’s a simple stat, but focuses the conversation around cars in/out/thru. More complex/complete data (ex: dwell time, multiple stops, other modes) paints a more complete picture and allows for better decisions.

I’m a big fan of the idea to go to two way traffic. It’s better for everyone who isn’t using downtown as a thoroughfare: pedestrians, cyclists, businesses, and even drivers who aren’t just trying to just get in/out as quickly as possible. It also gives us an opportunity to rethink bus lanes. πŸ‘

Calgary’s Urban Tree Canopy Is In Trouble, But We Can Turn Things Around 🌳
YouTube video by Myke Atkinson Calgary’s Urban Tree Canopy Is In Trouble, But We Can Turn Things Around 🌳

Calgary’s urban tree canopy is in trouble: we’re supposed to double it over the next 25 years, but recent data shows we’re going the wrong direction.

In this video, I’m sharing why it matters and what we can do right here in Ward 7 to start turning things around.

Let’s not spend the next ten years waiting β€” let’s spend them building.

Another green space in Ward 7 is at risk – this time in Edworthy Park. We need to stop the lack of engagement and bulldozer tactics that are taking away our limited inner city green spaces beside high-density housing without community consultation. #yyc #yyccc #ward7

You're never more than four blocks away from getting onto protected cycle routes!

Though these plans are all from various City documents, funding to take these from paper plans to reality has not been allocated and no proper deadline has been set.

Plans for protected cycling routes are spread across many different City plans and there's no single resource to see them put together. So at Myke for Ward 7 HQ we've gone through and drawn them all out onto a single map to give a sense of what the Ward 7 network will look like when it's complete:

Service disruptions on #calgarytransit are one of the biggest pain points for riders. We need better signage that speaks in plain language, and it would be good if it could be a bit more responsive to the actual service conditions. πŸ€ͺ

We need to stop subsidizing costly sprawl that divert funds to the city’s fringes and instead reinvest in infrastructure and amenities for inner city communities.
