If we can only have art from people who "aren't in it for the money" that means we can only have art from privileged middle-class dilettantes. Making art being a viable career is responsible for nearly all worthwhile art, and if it's not a viable career any more we will get drastically less of it.

For those not in those circles, I just need to remind you that losing a job to AI is not a vibes based idea. We are being told explicitly by art directors that we are being weighed against AI for jobs, people on teams fighting against the AD and you. It sucks. It’s demoralizing.

Definitely! Again my knowledge of the USSR is really what I learned in GCSE in the UK which was... surprisingly even handed? And my knowledge of South America is poor apart from what I know from my Venezuelan best friend. The first two essays/writings that come to mind for me are Sorghum and Steel

i mean. i'm not sure of the first statement either. I read books by people who visited too before the repression stuff became a publicised beat point in the anti-China pundits and my impression is that it has always been tense between the Han government and the Uyghur ethnic group.

China is a place I love a lot (I’ve been four times and lived there for stints And speak conversationally!) but it has a complex history wrt the people who live in the country. And it’s certainly not ethically just Han Chinese, which is what much of I think Western understanding of Chinese is :)

Naxi towns when I was in Lijiang and travelling around Yunnan there was a lot of conversation from Naxi locals about culture and linguistic loss under the cultural revolution. That said I can’t claim expertise on what happened but I think understanding the impact of the bans on the Four Olds
