I think if people want the original mechanics they'll play the original game. For a revision, I would simplify and, to me, that means 1d20 and no exploding dice.

For example, Operation Unfathomable only has 22 keyed rooms but is still a megadungeon.
It's not the size of the megadungeon but how you use it.
