That’s a great, succinct statement about the benefits of frequent service.
This is good, but I’d add the context about basic economy: it didn’t just emerge because the airlines wanted to make money - it was because the low-cost carriers (Spirit, etc) were eating the legacy airlines’ lunch by undercutting them with cheap fares.

You can build them with very little separation, but you need to build that in (to the old tunnel) from the start.
They probably could! But that’s not what I’m talking about. There are two separate conversations here: 1. What this diagram actually shows, and 2. What they should do instead.
And lots of people are confused about 1, leading to bad discussions about 2.
No, the diagram in the post is clearly showing the station under 6th St (the blue line on your map) not 5th.
It also shows another reason for the depth: it must run under high rise buildings immediately to the north.
I don’t think that’s the plan here: the station cavern is under the existing tunnel.
