Worth noting that not only did the funding change, but the structure of the funding completely shifted to the more discretionary system we have today; it discouraged the system-wide planning and investment.

Putting the tracks in before knowing anything about the rest of the operation was, in retrospect, the beginning of the end. The tail was always wagging the dog on this.

Yeah… and that giant empty circle at the other end of Memorial Bridge is indeed a huge opportunity; we should put something there.

It’s just… the cars!

Never mind that the rendering magically erases the adjacent McDonalds drive thru; the success of this seems almost entirely dependent on how you control the flow of cars through the space.

It wants to be a cobbled town square; as if there are no cars, just horses and buggies

It’s wild to read back about the Barney Circle proposal, and then compare those renderings to what actually got built in Atlanta.

How the streets meet it, in particular

Yeah, the idea of an activated stop makes sense. But just make it a regular traffic light!

β€œI live my life without a transit schedule, and I like it.”

That’s a great, succinct statement about the benefits of frequent service.

This is good, but I’d add the context about basic economy: it didn’t just emerge because the airlines wanted to make money - it was because the low-cost carriers (Spirit, etc) were eating the legacy airlines’ lunch by undercutting them with cheap fares.

To prevent the old tunnel from collapsing into the new tunnel.

You can build them with very little separation, but you need to build that in (to the old tunnel) from the start.

09.10.2025 14:51 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

They probably could! But that’s not what I’m talking about. There are two separate conversations here: 1. What this diagram actually shows, and 2. What they should do instead.

And lots of people are confused about 1, leading to bad discussions about 2.

09.10.2025 13:27 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

No, the diagram in the post is clearly showing the station under 6th St (the blue line on your map) not 5th.

It also shows another reason for the depth: it must run under high rise buildings immediately to the north.

09.10.2025 13:23 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I don’t think that’s the plan here: the station cavern is under the existing tunnel.

09.10.2025 12:51 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Ok, but the relevant measurement isn’t to the mezzanine? It’s to the top of the new tunnel.
