The Non-Profit Security Grant Program (NSGP) for 2025 has been released, including the FY 2025 Dept of Homeland Security Standard Terms and Conditions. No, our congregation will not comply with the administration's requirement to neglect DEI and to cooperate with ICE. We will not apply for funding that is supposed to protect us if it means sacrificing democratic principles. Such an agreement would not make Jews or anyone else safer. As Jewish Council for Public Affairs Director Amy Spitalnick teaches us: Jewish safety requires inclusive democracy and inclusive democracy requires Jewish safety.

This administration has made synagogues less safe.

DHS offers security grants, but under Trump they've added requirements which many synagogues, including my own, will not compromise their values to make—insisting that we reject DEI and turn away the stranger, directly contradicting the Torah.

title of quote graphic reads: PFT President Steinberg Statement on Mayor Parker's FY2027 Budget Proposal. Quote begins: "“Proposed revenue increases from rideshare services and cell phone towers that could raise $12 million annually for public schools are modest, broad, and should not be controversial. Philadelphia cannot continue to grow in population and prosperity without deeper, sustained investment in public education... “The PFT continues to urge the City to more immediately address system failures and repair needs in school facilities, and to direct the Board of Education to reinstate the moratorium on new charter school authorizations. The Facilities Master Plan as currently constituted will drive students and educators out of the District, and must be paused for further member and community input.

“As the City is poised to rename a street for a giant of education equity – the late... ...uperintendent Dr. Constance E. Clayton – we are called to remember that ‘every school’s a good school.’ That is, every school tasked with educating Philadelphia’s young people is a good school that is deserving of public investment and institutional support.

“We urge the City to be more transparent about the price tag for the facilities plan. Where are the funds necessary for repairing and modernizing dozens of school buildings across the city? What is the strategy for reversing student enrollment drop-offs due to District changes in admissions processes and the alarmingly un-regulated growth of cyber charter schools – by one estimate, responsible for the exodus of 14,000 students from District schools?

Our educators, students, and families across the city will continue to fight for the dignity of our school communities and students, who are already enrolled in good schools and simply lack the institutional and public support that every child deserves.”

We @pft.org urge Council to support Mayor Parker's proposal to raise new revenues for the School District, & also call on the City to direct the Board of Education to pause the plan to close schools & reinstate the moratorium on new charters. Fix our facilities, fund our schools! #PhlEd #PHLbudget

Pretty hard to “unleash American energy” when you’ve just put a leash on oil in addition to wind and solar power.

I don't think you have to Nostradamus to figure that bombing Iran might raise oil prices. And it seems pretty obvious that buying oil in advance of causing an oil price spike might just save Americans a lot of money. But...

...maybe there wasn't much planning?

If you’re roughly my age, it’s wild to reflect on the optimism for the future Americans felt when Obama was elected — young Americans spontaneously took to the streets to celebrate! — and contrast with what we face today. The falloff over the past 18 years is hard to process.

MS NOW is covering the dignified transfer of 6 dead US soldiers from the Iran theater.

Trump’s solemn enough, but compared to everyone else he looks like he can’t stand still. Wobbly balance, twitchy hands. Keeps looking down as if to check if his jacket is still buttoned and shirt is still tucked.

There are a lot of posts out there with the close-up visual of Markwayne Mullin on January 6, but this is a better perspective.

He’s not protecting others; he’s protecting himself and hiding. You can see plenty of people at the entry door, ready to take on the insurrectionists, but not Markwayne.

This week marks the 35th anniversary of the release of the debut EP from a wonderful London duo called Curve. Over at @treblezine.bsky.social I dig into the consistently entertaining sound they made throughout their career.

Text from the New York Times that reads: [Rand] Paul was the only Republican leading the effort, and no other G.O.P. senators joined him in support of the measure. Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Democrat to break with his party and vote against the resolution, in keeping with his vocal stance in support of Israel and reluctance to place limits on the president's authority to act in its defense.

Senate Republicans led efforts to block action to limit Trump’s as-yet-unauthorized militarization against Iran. While every one of these quislings need to be voted out, I did note this through-the-looking-glass moment from the New York Times.

Gas went up $.27/gallon at my regular station sometime between 6am and 3pm EST today, not sure why.

I'm exhausted by all the efforts to rewrite the history of the 2022 US Senate primary in Pennsylvania, with folks insisting "we told you so!" as to Fetterman, that Conor Lamb was always the better choice, and generally ignoring Malcolm Kenyatta's historic candidacy.

So let me say a few things. 🧵1/

I know that Trump travel/visa bans shouldn't affect sports teams, but I will not be surprised if Iran (and Haiti, Senegal, and Ivory Coast) sees enough team members banned, detained, or reluctant to travel that it impedes their play... if they actually participate in the World Cup at all.
