Nice! Anything in June/July?
I’m so excited to present at the CDE Seminar at @yalesph.bsky.social on Tuesday, and meet with friends and colleagues at Yale.
And New Haven is really showing off on this sunny Sunday. Have missed it!

🚨 NEW STUDY: Despite falling CA air pollution 1980-2022, relative racial disparities in short-term NO₂ exposure worsened.
➡️ Hispanic/Latino communities faced 3X MORE high-pollution days (>50µg/m³) than White residents in 2020.

NEW: A majority of registered voters want federal agencies like the CDC, NIH, and FEMA to increase their efforts to protect people from the health harms of global warming. Learn more in our new climate note:
Whether developing a new test for malaria, exposing health risks of climate change, or highlighting the impact of stigma on LGBTQ+ population well-being, our faculty advanced science in impactful ways over the past year.
Their efforts were recognized with the annual faculty research awards ⬇️
Grateful to see our research team's effort being recognized with the Yale University School of Public Health Team Science Prize! One of the most fruitful and synergistic research projects I have worked on.

This seems to reflect a wider (and woefully misguided) shift in US health research strategy, away from well-designed studies and careful research questions, towards an attitude that we can get all the answers by just scraping various routine datasets and chucking some rushed analysis at them.
Helhjertet enig med @torewig.bsky.social i @morgenbladet.no : Vi må gjøre Norge til en attraktiv havn for de kloke hodene som nå flykter fra USA.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.
I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

Here’s a piece in TCTMD where I commented on our recent publication on adverse pregnancy outcomes and future cardiovascular disease risk.

In brief, our findings suggest that the link between adverse pregnancy outcomes and future maternal cardiovascular disease risk may largely be due to shared genetic liabilities.

What started out as a teaching case in my Perinatal Epi class at @yalesph.bsky.social has now been published in Circulation (@americanheart.bsky.social). Very happy to work with Dipender Gill on this!

Much the same! Recently moved (back) to Oslo, Norway, and trying to create and implement a curriculum on climate change and health for the medical students here.
Interesting. A topic ripe for some diff-in-diffs analyses. In Norway, «we» had a divisive public discourse on this in the 1950s-60s, landing on no fluoridation. Would be interesting to consider the counterfactual scenario. Fig 4 in the review shows Norway to have a high prevalence of dental caries.
For a public health initiative of this proportion, there is a surprising lack of high-quality studies to guide policy. A Cochrane review from Oct found that water fluoridation may lead to slightly less dental caries in children, but no studies on adults.

Superb! Great initiative with the starter pack!
Who should one notify if an SER member is missed (🙋🏼♂️)?
Such an exciting Yale Center on Climate Change and Health Seminar by the truly amazing pioneer of the #ClimateChange and Health field: Dr Kris Ebi @krisebi.bsky.social introducing the latest progress on detection & attribution of the health impacts of climate change.

Me too!
So glad to see all the #EpiSky folks here! I'm a clinician and perinatal epidemiologist with special interest in how #ClimateChange affects maternal and child health. Moved from faculty at @Yale to @UniversityOfOslo this summer. I look forward to get to know more of you here.
