Like culture posts on this app simply don’t get the engagement and I think it’s because people feel it’s frivolous and actually it’s the thing we are fighting for, the freedom to make culture and cultural works

A screenshot of Rachel Dratch from SNL. She's a white woman with short dark hair and blue eyes, and she's making an awkward expression that implies, "Sorry I have to tell you this and ruin your good time. But also I'm kind of not sorry about it." I've added a subtitle that reads, "That's AI."
an updated debbie downer sketch but it's friends showing her funny videos and she has to respond like this to every single one like this:

My theory is a little different: I think most elite educated politicians & pundits who yell about unis being liberal are dog whistling about (minor) gains in diversity in elite spaces. They say they’re mad at the content but are mostly mad at who gets to make, challenge, learn and teach knowledge.

This is <exactly> why I never want to hear from James Carville ever again about the "faculty lounge." It feeds the far right authoritarian lies & the Herrenvolk democracy nonsense. No Democrat (or democrat) should use that language when discussing professors or universities ever again. Full stop.

Pete Hegseth went to Princeton and Harvard. Let me go dig up my old thread about how they don’t actually hate universities they just hate ordinary people that aren’t themselves going to them

Most Americans manage to go their entire lives without worrying what's inside the pants of Boy Scouts and I'm simply asking Pete Hegseth to do the same

The layers of anger and grief I feel about this is not for the internet, I think, but I am struck by how many reactions avoid addressing that a woman called the cops on him for being lost and on her property, feeding him back to the same kind of monsters he’d traveled so far to escape

The Trump Administration Can’t Kill Black History Month
We don’t need permission from the government to commemorate a complex past.
Last week, my mother took me and my kids to see the school where, 60 years ago, she was among the first wave of Black students to integrate a previously all-White school. We wanted to remind my kids that Black history is not just famous people in textbooks, it is often the people right next to you.

With face-scanning technology and other forms of biometric surveillance, government agents are collecting unprecedented amounts of personal data on people in the United States with little-to-no oversight or accountability from Big Tech.
Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey is trying to stop them.

How America Chose Not to Hold the Powerful to Account
Our national project of elite impunity
After the arrests of powerful men across the world, you might be asking why the US has so much trouble holding its leaders accountable for lawbreaking. Since Nixon, all three branches of government have worked hard to ensure they can break the law with impunity www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

historical detail I can't help but bring up: by some accounts, the event that instigated the British soldiers to open fire on Crispus Attacks and the rest of the crowd in the Boston Massacre was a soldier being hit by a snowball

The Epstein files document what many women researchers have long experienced but rarely seen laid bare so starkly: exclusion operating behind closed doors, shaping who gets funded, invited, mentored, and taken seriously. How many of these networks, norms, and gatekeepers remain in place?

Despite my best efforts for several years certain folks in my life and profession won’t listen to me about leaving X. If you won’t listen to me even though I’m an expert on what that website used to be & what it is now, maybe for some reason you will listen to Ben, Ben isn’t me, maybe that helps lol
