If the foam board is thin enough, you can probably just hang it on the wall with paint-safe double sided tape.

I suspect cloth would be used for climbing or claw-sharpening in your case, however.

You can use paper, or tape, or the nylon webbing from lawn chairs, or bits of vinyl, or cut up some old leather belts.

I once made theater set backdrops by tacking cloth to wood frames with hinges like that, and then the cloth can be painted with scenery.

I'm thinking about something like Japanese rice paper partitions. You lose space, but you said it was bigger than usual. It wouldn't be too expensive to join up foam insulating panels with theatre hinges. The challenge is finding something the cats won't fuck with.
