And for the first time in years, Katsuki Bakugou let himself sob with no one there to hear him.

He wanted to run to him, to pull him into his arms no matter how much it burned.
But he didn’t. The door shut with a soft, final thud. Katsuki’s head snapped up at the sound, eyes wild and red. The silence that followed was deafening, crushing in its finality.

tearing muscle from bone. The sound of Katsuki’s ragged breathing filled the apartment, chasing him with every heartbeat. His vision blurred, but he didn’t stop. The door clicked open. For a second, Izuku faltered, his hand trembling on the frame. He wanted to look back.

His throat closed around the words he wanted to scream—I love you, I’m not giving up, please don’t break like this—but they lodged there, heavy and unspoken. Katsuki stayed on his knees, shaking, his face hidden behind his hands. And Izuku… Izuku turned. Each step toward the door felt like

“I don’t know if I’ll survive it this time.” Izuku froze, his hand hovering in the air, trembling. His chest ached like it was caving in, but no words came. Nothing he could say would stitch this back together. Not tonight. Maybe not ever. His hand dropped uselessly to his side.

as if he could tear the thoughts out by the root. “Don’t say you still love me. Don’t. Because if you do… and you leave anyway…” The silence that followed was unbearable. Izuku reached out, but his hand hovered in the air, just short of touching. Katsuki didn’t look up. His voice was almost gone.

Izuku stepped closer despite everything, his voice breaking on every word. “I don’t care if it’s messy, I don’t care if it hurts, I just—”
“Stop!” Katsuki’s roar shattered, collapsing into something far smaller as his knees buckled. He pressed his hands into his hair, tugging,

“Kacchan, I need you. That’s it. That’s all—”
“Bullshit.” Katsuki’s laugh was a broken thing, bitter and hollow. “You need someone better. Someone who doesn’t drag you down into this shit, someone who isn’t… me.” Izuku stepped closer despite everything, his voice breaking on every word.

“Then don’t,” Katsuki spat, but his hands were trembling, his face crumpling. “Don’t reach for me at all. I can’t—” His voice wavered, caught between a sob and a growl. “I can’t stand the look on your face when you realize I’ll never be what you need.” Izuku’s breath hitched, his chest heaving.

when I fail—they fucking leave.” His voice fell into a jagged whisper. “You’re leaving too.” Izuku shook his head so hard it hurt, tears spilling freely now. “No—I don’t want to leave! I just… I don’t know how much more of this I can take. I don’t know how to reach you when you’re like this!”

“Don’t try to fix me with words. Don’t you dare.” Izuku’s hands trembled at his sides. “I’m not trying to fix you, I just—”
“You are!” Katsuki barked, his breath breaking unevenly. “That’s all anyone ever does—try to fix me, or change me, or make me into something I’m not. And when I can’t—

“Then maybe that’s all I am. Destruction.” The words lingered, sharp and unmovable. Izuku’s throat felt tight, his chest aching like something inside was splintering apart. “Kacchan… you’re not destruction. You’re—” “Don’t.” Katsuki’s voice cracked, but the glare he threw was wild, desperate.

“I’m not leaving because you’re not enough. I’m scared because I love you and I don’t know how to stop us from destroying each other.” Katsuki’s mouth twisted, pain flashing like lightning across his face. His shoulders shook, and for the first time in years, he looked small.

“Kacchan, that’s not true—” Izuku’s voice broke, desperate. Katsuki’s eyes finally met his, blazing and wet all at once. “Then why the hell does everyone leave? Why does it always end with me not being enough?” The words hung in the air like shards of glass. Izuku shook his head, tears threatening.

“I thought—if I just kept fighting, if I kept pushing, if I bled enough, screamed enough, maybe I’d earn it. Maybe I’d finally get to feel like I deserved something good.” His voice cracked, sharp and jagged. “But I don’t. I don’t fucking deserve it.”

“I smiled when I didn’t mean it. I laughed when it hurt. I pretended I had it all together, when on the inside I was falling apart.”
Izuku’s eyes stung. He stepped forward, reaching out, but Katsuki pulled back like the touch would burn.
