I think it could work like that, though I still feel like the in-game character selection can be better optimized. Though have you ever seen how some of the Lego games do it? I think it could work great with what you said about imaginators.

It would break the gameplay flow and cause people to get bored.
I am not saying you should ditch the idea. It can work as a main screen character selection, but you should probably think of something else to work in real-time gameplay wise.

It could work, but I think this would be kinda off a hassle on multi-player. While in skylanders, you just need to make a quick change of toys in this. You would have to wait for the game to load the character selection screen. Your friend chose a character. All of that could take some time.
