Madge died in 2002 and May in 2007 in their 80s and 90s respectively. It was a privilege to have known them and to have experienced old Ireland though our visits to them.

They lived in that house on the shoreline until 1993, when they were brutally robbed and beaten up and had to move to Ringaskiddy village. They were never the same. May once said: "They should have let me go out with the tide ..."

The cottage had three rooms - a main room and two bedrooms. Bizarrely, one of the rooms had a four-poster bed that their mother (who lived to 101 years old) bought a century ago in Cobh for £1 and brought across the harbour in a rowing boat. They didn't use it - they slept in the other room.

Madge and May were characters. They were the last occupants of an abandoned village by the shoreline near Ringaskiddy. They had no electricity and no running water. They cooked on an open fire and used an oil lamp by night. They never married. There are so many great stories about them.

My father got this book for Christmas. By total chance, the opening pages start with a story about relatives of ours - my grandmother's first cousins - who were living a 19th Century lifestyle in late 20th Century Cork. We used to visit them once a month when I was young; it was like a time machine.
