Official map from NOAA depicting the relative rank of winter 2025-2026 temperatures at a county level across the contiguous U.S. Many counties in the western and central U.S. are depicted in dark red color, signifying record-warmest winter. All other counties in the west and central U.S. are depicted in dark orange colors, signifying a "near record warm" rank.

The official NOAA stats out this week confirm that winter 2025-26 was the warmest on record across a huge portion of the western and central U.S., which has contributed to extremely low mountain snowpack & worsened the CO River crisis. Meanwhile, record March heat is in forecast.

Climate-eutrophication-anoxia interactions in Late Glacial Soppensee, Switzerland: Forcings, non-linear responses and recovery Combined effects of climate warming and anthropogenic nutrient loadings lead to lake eutrophication and anoxia globally. Because of chemical feedbacks…

New paper in QSR on the well-studied varved sediments of Soppensee with colleagues from @unibe.ch. Stan Schouten led this nice study looking at the effects of climate and nutrient cycles on lake eutrophication during a warming event in the past.

Takeaway - rapid warming in the past likely caused an increase in humidity in central Europe during spring/summer, and also an earlier spring.

Thanks to co-authors for the help with this one!

We used an isotope-enabled climate model and process of elimination to determine that the negative excursions in dDwax are likely driven by a combination of more humid conditions and an earlier start of the growing season during warm interstadial phases.

Leaf wax isotopes reveal enhanced humidity and earlier growing season during Dansgaard-Oeschger warming events in Europe The study of past abrupt warming events provides knowledge of climate dynamics that are critical for future projections. During the last glacial period, Dansgaard-Oeschger (D/O) cycles caused rapid te...

We have a new preprint out here: www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-8...

We found a somewhat unexpected result - leaf wax hydrogen isotopes become consistently depleted in response to the rapid warming events of the last glacial period (DO events).

Did Climate Skeptics Get THIS Right?! Is global warming just part of Earth’s natural cycle? In this episode of Weathered, we break down why that’s not the full story. From ice ages and Milankovitch cycles to the role of CO2 and fossil fuels, today’s climate change is unlike anything in Earth’s deep past. Learn why the speed of warming m

We often hear folks skeptical of climate change claim that "the climate is always changing" or "temperatures rise before CO2" or "its the sun". In a new episode of PBS's Weathered, @leafwax.bsky.social and I try and address these questions: www.youtube.com/watc...

Just your regular reminder of where global CO2 emissions are tracking compared to scenarios that keep warming to below 1.5C in 2100, with "no or low overshoot" (maximum temperature around 1.6C).

I am one of these NSF postdocs. NSF has frozen everyone’s access to their salaries and research stipends (that were already awarded) with no information about when they might be expected to be unfrozen. It still appears like we are expected to continue doing our work though.

LA is in a high fire risk region & fire weather conditions are complex. So we @wwattribution.bsky.social looked at many lines of evidence. All show: our burning of fossil fuels increased the likelihood of such extreme fire weather conditions www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...

Here's a schematic I published in this 2021 piece to illustrate how even a modest delay in onset of rainy season in Southern California can dramatically amplify wildfire risk by lengthening seasonal overlap between dry vegetation and strong offshore winds during Oct-Jan. #CAfire
