Okay so everyone reports BUSCO scores of the genome assembly but what about the genome annotation? My expectation was if a genome has 99% BUSCO Complete that a good annotation should also be 99% BUSCO Complete, but a colleague just tested this on a reference genome and it was only 70%. Huh?

Our newest unofficial video series—deep-sea animals that dance better than you 💃

Most sea cucumbers live a sedentary life on the bottom of the ocean, but some take a break from eating and pooping on the seafloor to go for a quick swim. They may do it as a defensive behavior or to find a mate.

3D rendering of the seafloor mapping data we collected by circumnavigating Bogoslof. Alvin collects a carnivorous “ping-pong ball sponge.” Alvin collects a rock covered in sponges and other biota. Note the sea fan coral in the background. A curious rattail investigates as Alvin places a sediment core into the sampling basket.

🎯 Dive highlights:
Wild-looking carnivorous #sponges
Super sticky mud cores
And of course, it wouldn’t be complete without a beautiful #rattail making an appearance! 😍
Stay tuned—more deep-sea discoveries to come!

Why does that matter?
📍 It’s critical for monitoring Aleutian volcanoes 🌋 and better understanding tsunami risks across the Pacific and Bering Sea.

Week 2 – A quick update from our project:
The Aleutian Arc: Integrated Exploration of Biodiversity at Hardbottom Habitats
💨The not-so-great: A few bad weather days kept us from launching Alvin safely.
🙌🏽The win: We made the most of it—mapping over 1,500 km (932 mi) of never-before-seen seafloor!

Trump administration cuts to NSF will result in more than 200,000 FEWER people per year involved in basic science, training, and education - what should have been the next generation of US scientists. This isn't even eating your seed corn, it is setting your seed corn on fire and salting the earth.

quote on a dark blue and purple background from Sudip S. Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), criticizing proposed cuts to science funding in the FY26 U.S. federal budget. The quote reads:

“If enacted, the FY26 budget request would end America’s global scientific leadership. The cuts to science would imperil our nation’s future health, security and prosperity. This budget proposal stands in stark contrast to the President’s call for a renewed commitment to American scientific leadership. Congress has demonstrated a bipartisan commitment to investment in research and must do so again to answer the President’s call.”
The quote is attributed to Sudip S. Parikh, CEO of AAAS and Executive Publisher of the Science family of journals. The AAAS logo appears at the bottom right.

I don't think anyone outside of universities, pharma and biotech, independent research institutions have any idea of what is happening right now. If you haven't sounded the alarm among your friends, family and colleagues, now is the time to do it.
