Oh I know but most of the scam ones I've had have a particular structure and style. It is a gmail address, but I'm conscious that... well, the reason they're using gmail is that a lot of people use it.

There’s been no talk of charging (but then there never is initially) but they’re asking if they can feature a book in their club and… I don’t think they need my permission so it seems odd.

Anyone had any contact with "More than a classic book club" and/or Aida Kane, based out of Toronto? Another day, another contact that might be genuine and might be a scam. There's a Meetup page, but I don't know if that means anything, and the events they have up are all for literary, not genre.

Whilst they're separated in time and tell independent stories, it's intended that they be read in order. I've heard it's possible to just pick up book 2 or 3 but I think you miss context and spoil earlier volumes a bit.

I mean it's not autocorrecting to "Wolfe", just to "Wolf" so it's not that. And I don't use 'wolf" as a proper name at all because I don't know anyone named that. I think it's independent of my specific typing habits.

Judging by cat’s reaction, when the Lamb opened the Seventh Seal it sniffed a bit, lost interest and walked away.

Robert Chambers wrote the King in Yellow stories, if that's who you mean (not French but that time)

a middle ground between "everyone understands" and "nobody understands" that is underexplored.

As far as the linguistics of it go, a lot of settings have some macguffin like the universal translator because unless your narrative is going to focus heavily on translation (which some do!) then you don't necessarily want it acting as an anchor to the pacing. But I agree that there is

it would sound jarring, but at the same time when writers descend to the thee's and thou's (correctly applied or not) that also sounds very affected. Writing dialogue that sounds "of its place" for a place that doesn't exist is an interesting challenge.

It can be tough to find the right register. How would someone in a fantasy world talk? Well, in some language we don't understand filled with myriad references we'd not get. Which would sound, to a peer, appropriate and modern. Except, as you say, if one were to write it as overtly modern speech

I've sensed a wry streak of humour in even @aptshadow.bsky.social's loftiest sci-fi novels, and this comes to the fore in #ServiceModel, a post-apocalyptic robot odyssey with shades of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett. It's farcical, absurd, satirical, deeply philosophical and really good fun!
