Chrysanthemum?
I’m convinced the luge was invented by someone who’d just given up on the world. “Fuck it. I think I’ll just throw myself down this icy slope. It can’t be worse than watching curling.”
So we’re experiencing today the new ‘thematic’ curation, at the Folkwang in Essen, and I have to be honest in a collection I’m less familiar with I don’t think it helps. It doesn’t add anything, except mild confusion, and possibly yearning. Sorry curators, but you had one job 🙄
Berlin, look up at the sky right now
Times like this I really wish I hadn’t deleted Two Dots from my phone.
I bet you February’s national alert test is a good one.
Every cloud and all that 🙄

Painted pony, Smithfield, Dublin, 1989, photo by Tony O'Shea.
Sometimes it’s the little things, like the order in which you paint, the precise shade of yellow, and which side and how far it is from the cool/warm interface 🤨
Dinner is chicken parcels with smoked bacon, red pesto, Dijon mustard, rosemary and sweet peppers. For today I am mostly experimenting.
Worked hard today, I’ve earned the calories, in lost brainpower if nothing else. I unfucked a painting from yesterday 🙄
Nice
I’m now watercolour sketching everything in the house, which to be honest could take a while 🤨
MIL’s rose vase on Moleskine.
Hunkered down under a code orange, will not get home for at least another 24 hours.
Works by Joep Coppens on the window sill bottom of that shot. Parents-in-law were friends of the artist.
Locusts, they’re at least edible.
"Flusslandschaft mit Angler". August Macke. 1911.
Currently stranded in Brabant due to snow, a head cold, and a sudden funeral. Should have spent this evening at a dinner party in The Hague.
Obviously I am not there.
Spent the day turning zoo sketches from a month back into small Moleskine paintings.
Each to their own.
Are those its eyes?…
ARE THOSE ITS EYES?!?
Another quick sketch from Saturday.
Graphite on Moleskine, watercolour added later.
Birch tree. Obviously.
That is an excellent gouache.
And get yourself an insulating pad to stand on. You can tog up as much as you like over the body but you’ll be shocked how fast you lose heat through the soles of your shoes. A good insulation pad can buy you about 1-2 hours. Any longer and you’ll need to be in a sleeping bag.
Should you ever want to paint watercolour outdoors in weather like this don’t (I could just stop there 🙄) use pure water, they make artists’ alcohol (it’s colourless), add it to the water in direct proportion to how far under 0C you are, it stops yer paint freezing.
From today’s walk in the woods (it was freezing cold)
Graphite sketch on Moleskine, watercolour afterwards
Hi again. Been away for a while. Had really bad flu 🤨
I suggest you get vaccinated if it’s offered, as this year refusal *could* lead to a stupidly early death 🤨
