What a year this week has been.
You can see the chapter in the open access book "The Order of People: Contesting Bio-Scientific Human Classifications" here: www.transcript-verlag.de/978-3-8376-7...
I highlight how recent population genetic research, while aiming to separate science from politics, can inadvertently reinforce existing inequalities and (Hindu) nationalist ideologies, urging for a more thoughtful engagement with these complex issues.
(New Publication Alert) 🧬❗ In this chapter, I discuss the intricate relationship between population genetics and politics in India, focusing on the making of the categories "Ancestral North Indian" (ANI) and "Ancestral South Indian" (ASI).

so nice to be in conversation about my new book “Racializing Caste”. You can listen to the podcast below. We talked about the hauntings of German scientific racism in India, the shortcomings of biological anthropology, and the problems of geneticists researching on the so-called “Aryan migration”.
How do colonial-era racial theories continue to influence modern science in India?
In our latest GHIL #podcast interview we're exploring this question by examining new research which traces the transnational connections between Germany and colonial India in the field of racial science. 🎧

Thanks to Svenja van Jan for her insightful review of Iru by Urmilla Deshpande and @thiago-barbosa.bsky.social for @hsozkult.bsky.social
Thank you for this! 💫 this is actually very insightful, also for us.
@thiago-barbosa.bsky.social ‘s book is truly an excellent introduction to the first female Indian anthropologist, Irawati Karve (1905-1970). Her work challenges both colonial academia and the current Hindutva view. I look forward to learning more.
