He laughed again, the sound more like he’d just been punched in the chest. “Yeah. I’m starting to get that.”

Autumn was done. “Bye, Cade.”

This time, she didn’t give him a chance to stop her leaving, but she could still feel his eyes on her as she walked away.

“See you around, cowgirl.”

“Autumn, wait a second,” Cade urged.

Autumn sighed. Could this day just be over already? “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵?”

“Just… Careful with them, yeah? They’re my friends, but I know how they can be. I’ve seen them eat girls like you for breakfast.”

“You obviously don’t know what kinda girl I am.”

Autumn hugged herself tight. “How d’you know ‘em?”

“School,” he replied. “That, and our families are old friends. Scottie’s pretty much my sister.”

“And Skye? She your girlfriend?”

“She wishes,” he snorted. “Not my type.”

There was that look again. “Alright, well–” she began, turning to leave.

She froze. Cade was bounding across the grass towards her. “My 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦 is Autumn.”

“Fine, 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘮𝘯,” he laughed, a little breathless. “How’d you end up hanging out with those two?”

“They trapped me in the bathroom ‘til I agreed to tryout with ‘em.”

He threw his head back, cackling. “Sounds like them.”

Slowly, they made their way to the locker rooms. Autumn stayed quiet as the two other girls chattered.
The whole day had been unsettling; she felt so lost and out of place in this crowd, and wished she’d just gone to art club like she’d planned.

“Hey, cowgirl!” a voice called. “Wait up!”

“Another night,” Autumn said, pressing her lips into a forced smile.

“There’ll be other parties,” Cade reassured, his face softening as he turned back to Autumn. “Busy wrangling cattle tonight?”

“Somethin’ like that,” she mumbled, hoping the blush in her cheeks wasn’t obvious in the fading light.

It had been a day filled with unexpected turns, but there was still one more twist in store.

“Hey,” Cade frowned, his head whipping around to look at Scottie. “Be nice.”

Of all the people she’d expected to defend her, this stuck-up, arrogant boy was the last person she would’ve picked.

“No, don’t think so.”

“You said you would!” Scottie pouted. Autumn had said no such thing, but she was beginning to understand that Scottie didn’t actually listen to anything that she didn’t agree with.

“I can’t. Busy.”

“𝘜𝘨𝘩! You’re no fun.”

The girls paused, glancing at each other in confusion, before joining in with Cade’s laughter. “You’re so funny,” Skye giggled, her gaze unnervingly icy despite her words.

“Cade, you’re coming back to mine, right?”

“Sure,” he shrugged, not taking his eyes off Autumn. “You gonna be there, cowgirl?”

Scottie gasped. “𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘮𝘯!”

Okay, maybe she was being a little rude, but this guy and the way he was staring her down wasn’t exactly giving her a warm, fuzzy feeling. To her surprise, Cade didn’t seem to mind her snappiness. He hesitated for a beat, registering what she’d said, then began to laugh.

“Landgraab Elementary.”

“That explains it,” he nodded, as if it explained anything. “I was s’posed to go there, but Mom thought I’d get some kinda Watcher complex if I went to a school named after the family.”

It was supposed to be a brag, she could tell, but she didn’t care. “Can’t think why.”

“Why would you?” she scowled, tugging at the hem of her shorts as Cade continued to look her up and down like a judge assessing a prized bull.

He snorted, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. Autumn got the impression he wasn’t used to being talked back to. “Well, what school did you go to?”
