Somewhere in Chestnut Ridge, Teddy sensed what was about to happen and shut down bsky ๐ Sorry for the mid-update cliffhanger!
No prizes for guessing who Cade's daddy is. I'm sure you recognise the smirk...
Thanks for sticking with me! Back again next week!
He laughed again, the sound more like heโd just been punched in the chest. โYeah. Iโm starting to get that.โ
Autumn was done. โBye, Cade.โ
This time, she didnโt give him a chance to stop her leaving, but she could still feel his eyes on her as she walked away.
โSee you around, cowgirl.โ
โAutumn, wait a second,โ Cade urged.
Autumn sighed. Could this day just be over already? โ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ต?โ
โJustโฆ Careful with them, yeah? Theyโre my friends, but I know how they can be. Iโve seen them eat girls like you for breakfast.โ
โYou obviously donโt know what kinda girl I am.โ
Autumn hugged herself tight. โHow dโyou know โem?โ
โSchool,โ he replied. โThat, and our families are old friends. Scottieโs pretty much my sister.โ
โAnd Skye? She your girlfriend?โ
โShe wishes,โ he snorted. โNot my type.โ
There was that look again. โAlright, wellโโ she began, turning to leave.
She froze. Cade was bounding across the grass towards her. โMy ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ is Autumn.โ
โFine, ๐๐ถ๐ต๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฏ,โ he laughed, a little breathless. โHowโd you end up hanging out with those two?โ
โThey trapped me in the bathroom โtil I agreed to tryout with โem.โ
He threw his head back, cackling. โSounds like them.โ
Slowly, they made their way to the locker rooms. Autumn stayed quiet as the two other girls chattered.
The whole day had been unsettling; she felt so lost and out of place in this crowd, and wished sheโd just gone to art club like sheโd planned.
โHey, cowgirl!โ a voice called. โWait up!โ
โAnother night,โ Autumn said, pressing her lips into a forced smile.
โThereโll be other parties,โ Cade reassured, his face softening as he turned back to Autumn. โBusy wrangling cattle tonight?โ
โSomethinโ like that,โ she mumbled, hoping the blush in her cheeks wasnโt obvious in the fading light.
It had been a day filled with unexpected turns, but there was still one more twist in store.
โHey,โ Cade frowned, his head whipping around to look at Scottie. โBe nice.โ
Of all the people sheโd expected to defend her, this stuck-up, arrogant boy was the last person she wouldโve picked.
โNo, donโt think so.โ
โYou said you would!โ Scottie pouted. Autumn had said no such thing, but she was beginning to understand that Scottie didnโt actually listen to anything that she didnโt agree with.
โI canโt. Busy.โ
โ๐๐จ๐ฉ! Youโre no fun.โ
The girls paused, glancing at each other in confusion, before joining in with Cadeโs laughter. โYouโre so funny,โ Skye giggled, her gaze unnervingly icy despite her words.
โCade, youโre coming back to mine, right?โ
โSure,โ he shrugged, not taking his eyes off Autumn. โYou gonna be there, cowgirl?โ
Scottie gasped. โ๐๐ถ๐ต๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฏ!โ
Okay, maybe she was being a little rude, but this guy and the way he was staring her down wasnโt exactly giving her a warm, fuzzy feeling. To her surprise, Cade didnโt seem to mind her snappiness. He hesitated for a beat, registering what sheโd said, then began to laugh.
โLandgraab Elementary.โ
โThat explains it,โ he nodded, as if it explained anything. โI was sโposed to go there, but Mom thought Iโd get some kinda Watcher complex if I went to a school named after the family.โ
It was supposed to be a brag, she could tell, but she didnโt care. โCanโt think why.โ
โWhy would you?โ she scowled, tugging at the hem of her shorts as Cade continued to look her up and down like a judge assessing a prized bull.
He snorted, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. Autumn got the impression he wasnโt used to being talked back to. โWell, what school did you go to?โ
