AI is now part of our civic infrastructure, and its architecture must sustain, not erode, our cultural and ecological ecosystems. Responsible AI must be governed, not just optimised, and designed for long-term interdependence over short-term scale or optimisation.

3. Transparent and Accountable
Transparency means more than publishing a charter. Creatives must know how their work is used, and be able to challenge misuse. Opacity in AI systems isn’t just a technical issue, it is a form of power that can obscure accountability and concentrate control.

2. Human-centred Use
Authorship must remain central. Whilst companies tout “amplifying potential,” creatives continue to see their roles diminished. Human-centric AI must go beyond interfaces, it must protect authorship, labour, and agency.

Diverse stakeholders must be involved from design to deployment, especially those most impacted. In the creative industries, this means centring creative workers and underrepresented voices within design processes and governance.

5. HEIs could better integrate UN Sustainable Development Goals so creative graduates understand sustainability early in their education.

4. Joined-up policies addressing both net zero and circular economy practices within the creative industries are needed.

3. Further development of shared sustainability standards, frameworks, definitions and infrastructure is needed – such as emissions tracking tools and materials reuse networks.

2. More sustainability-focused networks and forums should be encouraged across the creative sector, to support the exchange of knowledge and practices.

Five implications for policymakers and those working in the sector emerged from the event:
1. The creative industries should be positioned as key strategic partners in environmental policymaking, with more structured engagement with government.

The conference brought together sustainability leaders, academics and policymakers to discuss: embedding sustainability in creative education; opportunities to build in sustainability practice; circular economy design; developing standards and infrastructure.

Creative industries employers’ perspectives on skills initiatives: 2025 - Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre Read the latest State of the Nations research report from Work Advance on Creative Employers' Perspectives on Skill Initiatives in the UK.

Written by Heather Carey and Lesley Giles Co-Directors of Work Advance for the Creative PEC the research points to the need to build a robust talent pipeline and invest in lifelong learning.

🔸 Awareness of apprenticeships is nearly universal, but detailed understanding is limited. 99% of creative industries employers had heard of apprenticeships, yet only 46% reported having some knowledge of what they involve.

🔸 Creative industries employers are more likely to recruit graduates to their first job compared to school or college leavers.

🔸 Older workers aged 50+ are less likely to be recruited, despite 93% of creative employers reporting they were happy with their work readiness when they did draw talent from this group.

Key findings:

🔸 The creative industries recruit younger people (under 25) and older people (50+) at a lower rate compared to other sectors. 57% of creative industries employers had recruited young people aged under 25 in the past 2-3 years, compared to 64% across all sectors.

We've just launched the latest in our State of the Nations research series: ‘Creative industries employers’ perspectives on skills initiatives.’ The report suggests reforms are essential in the skills arena if the Government is to achieve ambitions of the Creative Industries Sector Plan.
