How does oxygen get from the ocean surface layer to the ocean's intermediate depth and bottom waters? πŸ§ͺ🌊

I wrote a brief overview of the processes involved and the key regions of ocean ventilation:

In the 1st half of 2025, @climate.noaa.gov 's staff were terminated, shutting down daily operations.

Now, former members have joined w/ nonprofit partners to launch Climate.us, where climate info can be safeguarded from politics.

Check out our website and join the effort today.

My @ternbicycles.com GSD may be the best purchase I have ever made in my life. It's hard to overstate how much I enjoy riding it with my kids. We've been able to avoid getting a second car as well, which is a huge financial help. It was my first ebike and I'm convinced everyone should try one.

The U.S. Secretary of Energy does not know that electricity is energy.

I'm glad we've gotten rid of DEI programs and are now giving America the leadership it deserves.

"Negative CO2 emissions" became a hot topic in oceanography. Yet there are many concerns about potential side-effects of trying to manipulate the C cycle. With partners from across Guangdong & Hong Kong we've developed a coastal site to investigate side-effects of Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement 🌊 🐠

My first PhD student, Shannon McClish, successfully defended last week. She's been at the leading edge of research into the linkages between surface production and biological carbon export. Couldn't be more proud of her and her work. Its nice to have something to celebrate these days.

Important to note that what they mean by ebike injuries usually means being hit by a car while riding an ebike.

Also, cars have killed 46 people in the county of Honolulu already in 2025. 46! Ebikes have killed no one.

Everyone is acting like US scientists will just go get science jobs elsewhere and sure some will but there are not anywhere close to enough science jobs elsewhere.

The end result of this will be much, much, much less science, not science happening in different places.

The Secretary of Commerce's new policy requiring his personal review of all NOAA contracts over $100,000 is directly harming American science. πŸ§ͺ

How do I know? Because this morning, twelve of America's rising leaders in climate science (including myself) were furloughed.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

Evaluating the impact of two decades of USAID interventions and projecting the effects of defunding on mortality up to 2030: a retrospective impact evaluation and forecasting analysis USAID funding has significantly contributed to the reduction in adult and child mortality across low-income and middle-income countries over the past two decades. Our estimates show that, unless the a...

Elon Musk casually, and illegally, dismantled USAID. According to a new study in the Lancet, that action will lead to *14 million* premature deaths between 2025 and 2030.

Again: Elon Musk is directly responsible for 14 million coming deaths. 4.5 million will be children.

It is difficult to describe just how disastrous it would be if just-released NOAA budget proposal (or even large portions) were to be enacted: It would involve a wholesale dismantling (decimation, really) of entities relevant to weather, climate, & ocean research & prediction.

You Can't Win a Debate You Refuse to Have: Why Democrats Shouldn't Stay Silent on Trans Rights Playing defense without offense is how you lose both the messaging war and elections

I know there's lots of other stuff going on, but honestly, nothing has disgusted & disillusioned me in recent years more than the Democratic establishment's utterly cowardly response to the right's demagoguing on trans issues. Just profoundly, profoundly depressing.

So they’re basically laundering our federal science budget over to the for-profit prison and concentration camp industry?

NSF’s 2024 budget was $9.06 billion.

NASA: $24.875.

NIH: $47.7 billion.

Fund science, not cruelty.

I can't tell if it's because I'm too NYC focused but does it feel like the news cycle spent more time crashing out on the fact that NYC picked a brown Muslim dude as is primary candidate then it did on a right wing extremist who shot 2 Minnesota legislators killing one, her husband and dog?

THIS IS FUCKED UP: Sae Joon Park took bullets for America in Iraq.

The thanks he got? A one-way ticket out of the country he nearly died for.
He’s being deported to South Koreaβ€”after surviving spinal injuries, PTSD, and addiction.

He fought for America. Now America throws him out like trash.

It's infuriating how 99% of the coverage of this new war doesn't bother to mention that it is happening because we had an agreement to limit and monitor Iran's nuclear program, which even Trump's own aides said was working, and he blew it up because it was negotiated under Obama.
