It's generally agreed that the UK needs more #China expertise - from understanding history & culture to speaking Mandarin. But as I ask in the Spectator, what if institutions charged with improving such capabilities are captured by the Chinese communist party?

Decolonize scientific institutions, don’t just diversify them
Indigenous scholars set out eight steps to stop marginalization in academia and to enable a shared Indigenous agenda in science.
Diversification is not decolonisation. "Those who avoid engaging with racism and colonialism in scientific works and spaces merely promote the status quo. All scientists will encounter opportunities to be anti-racist."
Privilege = responsibility.

So pleased to have a thumbs-up from the thinker that inspired this essay, her work in Violent Phenomena (www.tiltedaxispress.com/violent-phen...) deeply changed the way I look at translation, can't recommend it enough. Her poetry is terrific, too: www.thewhitereview.org/poetry/two-p.... Thank you!

Indeed. Having navigated this for over 45 years, there's no one answer. Depends on the political moment, the particular circumstances. Also depends where you are in your career. The elephant in the room is conscious or subconscious self-censorship. Also, whose safety? Ours or our contacts in China?
