What’s happening on adaptation at COP30? Adapting to our changing climate is getting more attention at the negotiations as we begin to breach the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal. Key issues are indicators of adaptation and finance.

Line graph time series of daily mean Arctic sea ice thickness for each year from 1979 to 2025 using shades of red, white and blue. A seasonal cycle is shown with thicker ice in late winter and thinner ice in late summer. A long-term decreasing trend is also visible. Data is from PIOMAS v2.1.

⚠️ While extent will not be setting any annual minimum records this year, the average thickness of #Arctic sea ice is actually at historic lows for this time of year (in the dataset by PIOMAS). Thinner ice is younger and usually more fragile.

Recipients of a U.S. Climate Science Fellowship Are Put on Unpaid Leave

Sorry to hear this. This has been a prestigious & competitive fellowship program that has helped train next gen of science leaders. Alumni of this program are impressive. I had the honor of meeting fellows at AGU. While at NOAA we had the Sci Advisory Board review the program. It got very high marks

I don't have an announcement for my next professional steps yet but plan to remain very much involved in the climate, resilience and environmental policymaking space. To all of my EPA and fed colleagues remaining I thank you for your continued service. I'll be watching and rooting for your success.

I've been incredibly fortunate throughout my federal career to work on impactful things -- seminal actions under the Clean Air Act, influential scientific assessments, international agreements -- and to be surrounded by wonderful, dedicated colleagues and mentors who helped me grow.

This was my 2nd time at EPA, capping 27+ yrs of fed service, including years in EPA's stratospheric protection and climate programs, a detail at the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy where I also served as deputy of USGCRP, and then at NOAA as deputy of the Climate Program Office.

The changing nature and frequency of wildfires, inland and coastal flooding, heat and drought threaten public health & welfare including by thwarting EPA's mission to provide clean air & water, and to provide cleanup of hazardous chemicals. With a change in priorities I felt the time was right.

Our office was charged with leading EPA's climate adaptation efforts and running the Smart Sectors program in which EPA collaborates with businesses and trade associations to find solutions to problems outside of the regulatory space and to serve as liaisons to different industrial sectors.

It's with a lot of mixed emotions that I'm announcing that last week was my last at EPA. I decided to take the offer to leave. I was hired as EPA's first director of the newly created Office of Climate Adaptation & Sustainability.

Effects of Plastic Pollution on Arctic Animals. Summary for Policy-makers. | AMAP

AMAP recently released three high-level summaries on important topics for the Arctic: plastics, radioactivity, and climate. I had the honor of chairing this group a while back and it's great to see this work continue and made accessible. Kudos to all in AMAP who made this work possible.
