By all means do that and lock the account if needed. Once the account is locked only followers will see anything you're doing on the account.

You can then use that time to remove any media related stuff and then reopen the account when you're ready.

Thats the sort of thing I was afraid of happening when artists fully deleted the twitter. It made more sense to privatize the account than to full deactivate it.
