You know the wild thing is 99% of the reason Yerba Buena is the indie hangout spot for GDC is because it's free, open, loosely regulated, and easy to host an informal "fuck GDC we'll do it ourselves" event there. It's not "an unofficial part of GDC", it's the "eh fuck GDC but this is nice" thing.
